[up]If the media makes a mistake when they cover a story, they should apologize. That's all.

Obviously, Fox News, Limbaugh, and Yee had nothing to do with the idiot who sent the note.

[up] As I understand it, they didn't make a mistake. They just didn't get a translation for Limbaugh.

[up] So everyone who overreacts over a quasi-imagined slight deserves death threats? Yeah, no.

No, I was saying that his not getting a translation from the network serves him right.

Well, not getting a translation for an important speech, for a political commentator, is a reasonably minor inconvenience that does not produce direct injury or property damage/loss, and Limbaugh is an asshole, so it serves him right to have to deal with the inconvenience. Assuming it's as you've described above, that Fox forgot to give him a translation.

Obviously, I don't think they did it on purpose—they have no real reason to, crazy Xanatos Gambits aside.

I'm a firm believer that China and Chinese culture has something for just about everyone. Don't let the Nationalists fool you. Chinese culture isn't all about the Han. There are plenty of ethnic groups in China and diversity. China isn't simply made up of one race. And don't like the haters get to ya' as well. The government definitely needs some work, but it isn't as bad of a place to live as many people say.

I'm personally a bit of a Harbin fanboy. I kind of like Xinjiang, as well.

You really have no fucking idea how bad it is in China for certain ethnic minorities.

Seriously, of all the stupid reasons to make a death threat....

It could be wor—actually no, it couldn't. Even Evangelion is a more worthy reason than this.

I don't understand why this happened. As someone said, if this were a Jewish person this would be absolutely outrageous, but because he's Chinese, he deserves it because "he's a jerk too"?

Sigh.. I am so sick of people treating racism against asians as less serious as racism towards other races. Just pretend for a second that Limbaugh had imitated any other race. It wouldn't be as funny. But apparently Asian is always the exception and it's OK to make fun of Asians since we are somehow an inherently a "funny" race. the fake "ching chong" mocking of Asian languages is a pretty unique to racism against Asians so I guess maybe it's harder for some people to see it the way i do. A lot of Asian-American kids grew up being told "ching chong ching chong" all the time. it is considered an ethnic slur.

It's cause Asians make more money than whites.

...last time I checked, whites make more money, on the backs of east Asian scientists, while employing ethnic minority white janitors, getting gas from south Asian store clerks, eating the food of Latinos, and being served at the DMV by blacks.

A lot of Asian-American kids grew up being told "ching chong ching chong" all the time. it is considered an ethnic slur.

As someone who went to elementary school with a high percentage of Asians, I know firsthand how offensive those words can be.

But it wouldn't be fair to say that racism against Asian- Americans is entirely overlooked in this country. I remember a few years back, Rosie O' Donnell landed herself in hot water over a remark she made on... some TV talk show, I forget what.

Regarding Danny Devito's drunken appearance on The View, she said, "It's news all over the world, you know- in China, they're all saying, "Ching-chong ching-chong ching-chong, Danny Devito, ching-chong ching-chong, drunk, The View, ching-chong."

IIRC, her remark was all over the news for a few weeks, and she eventually apologized publicly.

I love to learn, I love to yearn, and most of all... I love to make money.

...so do people use "ching chong ching chong ching" because chinese starts with a "ch"?

[up] [up]Yeah, but that's not a valid reason for racism, and "ching chong ching chong" is still racist.

[up] That is (supposedly) used because it's what Chinese sounds like to people who speak English.

Damn that's fast reply...I just clicked forum top and immediately clicked OTC again and the reply's already there... Nevermind, thought you were talking to me. tongue

Of course it's racist, and it's like calling a black guy a nigger without being black or something...

Just curious where that particular slang came from...theres gotta be a better explanation other than "chinese starts with ch" though...

I think it stems from an English alteration of the word 'Qing', as in the Chinese Qing Dynasty.

Didn't say it was a valid reason for racism, I said it's a contributing factor for why racism towards asians isn't considered as bad as racism toward other groups. Money makes everything better.

That said, I'm reminded of the racist joke that was posted over in the joke thread.

That's why the "model minority" stereotype is NOT cool since it actually makes people kind of just brush over all asians like "OH THEY DON'T NEED HELP THEY'RE ASIAN(and apparently gives everyone else permission to be racist)." I got a lot of that too growing up actually. People assumed i was rich "because I was Asian" and that's not true. the asian population in the U.S. is small but it's very diverse and actually quite polar in terms of socio-economic status. it's kind of dependent on the historical context of each groups reason for immigrating though.

point is: stereotypes are bad. even "good" stereotypes.

Bad, bad, so very bad. That's gotta be the source of a lot of other racism.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Deboss: Well, no one ever separates Anglos from Slavs and such...though I was only taking advantage of the opportunity to snark.

Signed: It's got nothing to do with "Chinese" starting with "ch". It's just a collection of common or semi-commonly-in-popular-consciousness Chinese names, specifically ones that have little other meaning—Chang, Cheng, Chung, and Chong are known last names, Ching is usually thrown in due to similarity as well as things like I Ching (and possibly due to spelling), the second most common set is Wang/Wing/Wong, of which Wang and Wong don't have normal definitions (slang aside).

Which of course means that you're happy if they don't start throwing "wang" and "dong" at you just to give you racial mockery along with puerile attempts at crude humor.

I know this first-hand, and I found it quite annoying. Especially if you're that one east-Asian kid in a non-gifted-or-honors class, and get treated as basically people's new cool toy. It's like "Yo, I met a Chinese kid today! He was funny!" And what do people do with new toys? Check out the defining features, of course. Which includes basically every racial stereotype they can think of:

  • speaking Chinese
    • which quickly leads to "ching chang chung wing wung" etc.
  • eating rice
  • using chopsticks
  • having slanty slits for eyes
and, depending on the ages and backgrounds of the people you're dealing with, possibly one or more of the following:
  • obsession with academic performance and grades, especially in math and science (though this sometimes manifests as positive discrimination)
  • high levels of intelligence (once again, sometimes positive discrimination, but can easily be negative when viewed as "dork")
  • being short, or having small penis/breasts
  • being socialist or communist
  • liking animé or videogames too much
