Three Character Questions

I like the character questions thread, but ours is one static list of almost 30 questions and thus a little tedious for me. Instead, how about this one, that I saw in the Nanowrimo forums: Answer three questions as your character, and then pose three new questions for the next person. This way, the questions go in all kinds of interesting directions.

Don't worry about whether someone else happens to be answering the same questions as you are. It doesn't matter if you do that. What matters is that you answer three and put in three new ones.

It's good if your questions don't presume genre or setting, but no big deal if they do occasionally.

Here's three to start us off:

  1. Does your name mean anything that you know of?
  2. What's your weapon of choice?
  3. Would you commit a crime if you knew you wouldn't get caught?

A brighter future for a darker age.

  2. The darkness.
  3. Heck no!

Um, dude, you have to ask three after answering three.

1) Eos Whitford. Means "dawn" in Greek, and "white shallow-part-of-a-river."
2) Handgun. Sometimes I have to use revolvers, swords, archery... and one time a chair leg.
3) Depends on the crime and the reason.

4) Describe your childhood home.
5) What's your favorite fruit?
6) How old are you?

As Quon — one of the major players in the World's fate:

4. Clouds float abound in Ethereal heaven, and the sun shines always and paints the sky in blue and purple. I do not recall any more from my muddled memory. Wait. By my childhood home here, I had my own chambers.. and a Caretaker. A willow tree growed in the hub outside. And the walls hemmed me in like a cage would a bird.
5. Apple
6. They say that I am dix-sept ans, but I hear the slight tremble in their voice and I am not sure really if that is the truth.

7. What was the most vivid, impressionable dream that you had? Tell me about it.
8. Do you cry sometimes?
9. What do you wear if it snows?

Answering as Anhelia Aescar, main viewpoint character.

1. Describe your childhood home.

My father was a Guards officer, and that meant I was largely raised in the Third Street Barracks. My mother died when I was very young, and my father was always busy, so I was raised by the soldiers as much as anyone else. There were other children like me, and we played, and we fought — I was a regular champion of the wooden sword. I'd beg food from the cooks and learn things from them. I'd harass the armorers until they let me help them clean the rifles and the pistols, sharpen swords, and all the rest. I was the Colonel's daughter, and I think that always did get me special treatment, even though I never did ever try to use his authority to get anything. It honestly never occurred to me.

And then, when I was nine, they arrested my father, for treason, and imprisoned him. They sent me to live with my aunt, and ... you know, I don't want to talk about that today. I'm having a good day. I won't if I talk about that.

2. What's your favorite fruit?

Pears. You have to get them when they're just at the right point of ripeness — when they're softening but not mush, when there's still just the faintest bit of firmness under the teeth. They are so sweet and wonderful it's heavenly. Messy, though, if you're not careful. It's really hard to eat a pear and not get sticky fingers, at the very least.

3. How old are you?

I'm 34 years old and I've been dead for about nine months, now. Does age mean the same thing when you're dead? I certainly won't age like I would have, otherwise. I can ... deteriorate, even decay, if I don't look after myself right; but I won't age. I'm still not sure what I think of that.

And three back:

  1. Have you ever lost someone you care about?
  2. If you had to choose just three possessions to take with you, which would they be? Assume you have clothes and a supply of food and drink and other such essentials.
  3. Are you hot-blooded about revenge, or is it a dish best served cold?

A brighter future for a darker age.

As Raki — a surviving refugee of the '14-20 China coup d'etat:

1. ... ..yes. I have. I don't want to answer this for now, can I— next question please?

2. I'd take er, lemme see. Asides from food and clothes.. I'd take my jeejah, for sure. Life'll be a bitch without music. And uh, I'll have my knife— that alright with you? I'm kinda paranoid about my safety, and if someone's on at you.. it's best to end it quick. Uppity-up here (points at sternum). And.. my picture of me and my sis, Clare, together. Call me sentimental, but, to be honest, she's mostly all that I've got 'ta keep me going.

3. If someone wants to fuck you in the ass, bloody well 'cause they're dicks, then eh, I say, oh what a hell. If they do it, 'cause deep down, they hate your guts down to the bone.. better say hello to my little friend. (flicks out butterfly knife) And it's a hell of a lot of hot blood that's gonna be spilt.

I still have 3 questions above that's yet to be answered:
1. What was the most vivid, impressionable dream that you had? Tell me about it.
2. Do you cry sometimes?
3. How would you feel if it's a pale winter's day?

Two different characters, Tahaliston and Balthentere.

1. What was the most vivid, impressionable dream that you had? Tell me about it.

Hah, I don't really sleep.

2. Do you cry sometimes?

...and I don't really have eyes.

3. How would you feel if it's a pale winter's day?

...

...

Is there a point to any of this?

1. What was the most vivid, impressionable dream that you had? Tell me about it.

I...I was in a field. And there was this Bull. A black bull. It looked kind of like this one friend of mine but it wasn't and I just kind of knew it, you know? I knew that the bull wasn't him, he was just this...it's weird. So then it sort of...opened up. Fell apart. 'Cause it was made of plaster and dust and then the field filled with water...don't tell anyone I told you, though. Seriously. You can't tell anyone.

2. Do you cry sometimes?

Does it look like I can cry? Ah. Sorry. It's just...not in the conventional sense.

3. How would you feel if it's a pale winter's day?

...introspective, I guess..? Honestly, I'd probably just be looking for a place to stay warm.

New questions:

Ace "The Ace of Spades" Spellbound

1) Does my little sister count? The "King" and "Queen" thought pets were beneath us.

2) First kiss? Uh... High School I believe, I was a junior and had just barely ran away from home. I had run witha different crowd than the theatre kids. This insanely hot goth chick Abbey, she thought the funny way my mind worked was totally cool, and running away form my parents helped. We were on the roof of an old gothic theatre, holding hands while laying on the roof, talking about something. She started it, she just came on and kissed me. It was an amazing thing but it sort of become less intense every year I'm away from it. We've moved on, he's a law major who minor in occult studies. We still talk 'n' stuff.

3) This astrology major I once knew got me into it, cute girl but she soon made it obvious I had to "stick to my own kind". But now I do it every night, it's so lovely and peaceful out there and I can just stare into the vastness and sort of feel at peace with myself. I may make fun of the Buddhists and the Hindus but I think there's something to their little philosophies, ya know?

New Questions:

  1. If you were one of the four "elements", which would you be and why?
  2. What did you study in college and why?
  3. Do you believe in God or some sort of higher power?

Answering as both Anhelia and fifteen-year-old Mindala.

1. What was your first childhood pet?

Anhelia: I never had a pet of my own, ever. There were cats around the barracks, growing up — they kept down the mice, which got into the feed for the horses — and I'd pet them and give them tidbits from the kitchen and they'd spend time with me when I wanted to be alone, sitting up on the walls. After that, at my aunt's — no. She'd never have allowed something so ... sentimental, for herself or for anyone else. And after that, the Army, and never settled anywhere long enough for that.

Mindala: I have a dog, Grizzen; he's about waist-height to the top of his head when he sits, and he's all grey and wiry-haired. He's back at home with my mom and sisters, though; I couldn't really take him to the capital, though, and home is where he knows.

2 First kiss?

Anhelia: First kiss not counting any forced on me was with this girl at military school — Mairan. We were — you know how people can be competitors, even enemies, and yet — there's something more in their relations with each other? That. Not that we did anything about it but struggle harder to best each other. It was only after the end, when all the classes were done, that she kissed me. Full on the lips, too. And told me that the only reason she didn't do it earlier was because I'd likely have written it off as part of the game, part of the competition. Only when the system didn't have us as competitors, but as fellow graduates — that's when she knew it would be genuine, seen that way. We kissed a lot, that next week and a half. Nothing more, and never again — after our graduation, we had our first postings, and never more than bumped into each other since. Still, I remember it, and well.

Mindala: A kiss, like a love kiss? Never. Just kisses from my parents and sisters, you know, affection. Not that I've never wanted to, you understand? But it would complicate things. [Author's note: this is going to so change ...]

3 Ever been stargazing? This is not a yes or no question.

Anhelia: Never as the main point of anything. My father and I, we'd go on walks, or stand atop the walls and just look out at the sleeping city. Sometimes we'd look at the stars, and he'd tell me about them. Later, on campaign, camping under the starlight — there'd still be there, and I'd tell their stories to the younger ones.

Mindala: Yes, I have — my tutor, he had a telescope — not fancy like those in the Royal Observatory or anything — and he'd let us look through it and see the stars and the planets and the rings of fire. I wonder if I could get to see the Royal ones, now?

  1. When things get really scary, do you run or do you fight?
  2. You have to dress up for some fancy function where you want to impress. What do you wear?
  3. Food: fun or boring necessity?

This is as Jessi.

1. Fight! I've got a gun and I know how to use it! Running away from a battle is just stupid. I might even join the army. It's family tradition, after all.

2. Dress to impress? I could do that. I think I have a white dress I wore to a wedding once. I actually spent a lot on it, 'cause I invited Ed and wanted him to see me in fancier clothes.

3. Food is awesome. I don't think I can cook, that's what everybody tells me, especially Ed, but he can, kind of. My friend Ralph is much better. He's the kind of guy who would have his own restaurant or something. There's a reason we have parties and stuff at his house.

New questions:

1. Who do you despise the most, and why?
2. Is there any one material possession you deem especially important?
3. What kind of education (as in school) do you have? If you had some, how was it? \\

Ace Spellbound

1) I despise my suffocating, undercaring, selfish, rich, good for nothing self centered parents and my god-damned more handsome, more talented, more charming twin cousin JACKSON SPELLBOUND, to replace me as the family head. I've been disowned after all.

2)Uh... Not really, Is my sister a material? I mean I doubt it, but I guess... I have this car, its in the shop right now, I know a few Automechanic kids from high school who are building my dream car, the Ace-mobile, she i going to be the greenest cleanest and most beautiful car you have ever seen man.

3) I'm a college student, sophomore theatre major. I've been enjoying it so far. Pretty pleasant, kinda hard, but I like it, my theatre and lit classes have been teaching me a lot about conventions, expectations, it's kind of helped me see that the world, is like a story, made of different parts which can been predicted ahead of time, and something some expect and others don't, but these thing will happen, and there are warning signs you know. Like if stopping someone before they say "Things can't get any worse".

I've been meaning to develop some characters... maybe this will help. Also, I'm still not used to how this forum's formatting works....

1.

Greg: Earth. I put up with a lot of stuff from morons, but I stand strong where it counts, and never give in.

Julia: Air... oh, I'd love to just soar above the sky, or wisp around in faraway lands...

Yisani: Fire. The cleansing fire that burns away the weak detritus of society.

2.

Greg: My mom... well, I loved her dearly, and I miss her, but we were never as close as I was with my dad. Me and him don't always agree, but I'm happy to say I'm following in his footsteps. I'm not really smart enough to go into law like him, but I'll get a job with something like Amnesty International, make him proud.

Julia: I never met my mother — she died when I was pretty young — but I'm told I'm a lot like her. My dad... well, it's complicated. I don't actually look like him, and everyone knows I'm not really his... but he still cares for me like I was, and that's all that matters.

Yisani: My parents served the king until one day, they tried to betray him. I turned them in, and they were executed for treason. I regret nothing.

3.

Greg: Yeah. I always keep around my grandfather's beaten up old Bible. My dad's an atheist, and kinda rolls his eyes, but he knows it means a lot to me and lets me be. He's convinced himself a few years in college will make me "see the light," but it's really only made my beliefs stronger. Still, as long as it makes me work towards a more just world, he's happy.

Julia: Well, my dad's an atheist, my brother's a pretty firm Christian, and apparently so was my mother... but I never really thought about it. I sort of believe there's something out there, because... well, I don't know. It's just... call it a feeling in my heart. There's something bigger, something better.

Yisani: There's a higher power. I assure you of this. Every time I cast a spell, I hear its whispers on the edge of reality. It does not live in the hollow temples we build to placate the peasants, nor in the pagan shrines they worship at when they think we aren't looking. It is not the all-loving force the monks of the South worship, nor the stern father followed in the West, nor even the ruthless, unforgiving judge the men of the North bow to. When I pray, I only pray its attention is never drawn to our little world, for if it is, it will mean our end.

Answering as my character Shaonu. May be ninja'd.

1. For what, if anything, would you sacrifice your life?

My Husband. He'd do the same for me.

2. What are your goals, and what is the most terrible thing you would do to achieve them?

My goals... to stay alive, and keep my family alive. There is no limit to what I'd do if forced.

3. What can change the nature of a man?

Having the woman he loves injured due to his mistake.

1: How do you see the world?

Anhelia: It's capricious. It's neither a friend of the powerful nor the friend of the oppressed. Even the mightiest can fall, and even the lowest can succeed. It does, however, have something of a sense of humor.

Mindala: I know it's not all that, but the world I like to see is one where hard work and honest intentions can get you a long way. I hope that's the world I find, anyway, because I don't mind hard work and my intentions are simple.

2: Describe your best friend.

Anhelia: Dead, and it's all my fault. Calia fell in the charge, but I didn't stop for her, didn't do anything for her. I know, my duty, my command, and all that. She fell and she bled out while I went on to death and glory. Worse, even though I died, they brought me back as an Eternal. Calia? Buried in a foreign land, under a small white stone marker. Calia — had more to live for than I, more to come back to. It should not have been this way round.

Mindala: My older sister Jesa was my best friend too, growing up, but she married and is overseas now — I hope she writes soon, and gets my letters.

3: How do you fight?

Anhelia: "Without regard for her own safety". So says the commendation for the Grand Star, anyway. More prosaically, with carbine, pistol and saber. And to win. War is not won through pride alone; war is won through cleverness.

Mindala: I haven't fought since I was a young girl, but I've had a few lessons; Father never wanted his girls to be helpless. I know the use of staves, and how not to die quickly in a knife fight, and which end of a pistol to point. I've got lessons to go to, too ...

These questions are all Perfect for an entire assortment of my characters. So answer with them all, Ninjas be damned.

So, we've got Shaonu again, along with Toshi, Jiro, and Bai Mao.

1. Are you a honorable opponent or will you fight dirty to win?

  • Jiro, Shaonu: Honor in battle is the only way.
  • Bai Mao: I'll fight dirty if necessary to stay alive. Otherwise, I'm a pretty honest fighter.
  • Toshi: Define "dirty." Is it tricking the enemy, taunting them into makinf a fatal error? Distraction?

2. Do you lie, and how often?

  • Shaonu, Toshi, Jiro: Sometimes.
  • Bai Mao: Never.
3. Do you believe a formal education is best?
  • Toshi: Yes.
  • Everyone else: I've lived without it.

1: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment?

Anhelia: I know what the world considers my greatest accomplishment. Dying well. The suicidal charge of the Queen's Third Hussars, and in particular the accomplishments of Green Squadron in overrunning the Andreith guns that were wreaking such a terrible toll on our infantry — it was front-page news in the major Arden newspapers for days. Me? I consider it a tragedy of poor planning, desperation, and atrocious luck. Any right-minded strategist, seeing me restored as an Eternal after that, would kill me again just to set an example — followed by those that ordered such insanity or caused it to be necessary.

What to be proud of? I was proud of graduating and fulfilling my father's desire for another generation of Aescar officers. I was proud of the two years I put in as an instructor for cavalry recruits; I dare believe that some young men and women are still alive because of that. I'm proud in a bitter way, perhaps, that at least the death of my troopers was not in vain, that we accomplished what we set out to do, even at such a cost.

Mindala: That for three years my mother's illness didn't affect the running of our household, because I did what I could. I could have done better — always could have — but I did well enough.

2: What do you consider your greatest failure?

Anhelia: Do you really need to ask me that, after what I just told you? Although there's a little extra in the failure column: Calia. My friend. My lover. My senior lieutenant. Yes, I know; the military code forbids it. Well, that's honored more in the breach. Anyway, she died, and I could have saved her. She died and I never made up to her what I did wrong to her, and that list of things — I don't think we have time.

Mindala: I don't know. That I think my parents are still ... faintly disappointed in me. That I'm the one of their children who's done the least, has the least future, who's got the least potential for it. My siblings — they're brilliant.

3: You get back one thing (not a person) that you've lost at any point in your life. What is it.

Anhelia: All I really want back is people. Do horses count? Quicksilver was the best mount I'd had; he didn't deserve to die like that.

Mindala: I never had much to lose. Something not mine, perhaps, that I miss anyway; the silver birch from behind the east tower, that I used to sit against and read. The frost got it four years ago, and it died; they cut it down a year later when it was sure dead. I miss it.

I'll answer these questions as Acatin.

  1. What's your favorite environment? City streets? The deep woods? The rolling meadows? Or what?

I like to sit near a river and just think, when I have some off time. The gentle, trickling water, the feel of soft silt around my toes... It is a very peaceful environment.

  1. Would you torture someone, if they had information that could save lives?

I've tortured people for less, so yeah, I'd say so.

  1. Have you ever committed a crime?

I've committed many crimes, some worse than others.

My questions:

1. If you could bring any one person back to life, who would it be?

2. If you were in a sitation where you could achieve your ends through two means; brute force or subtle manipulation, which would you choose?

3. You are presented with a damning choice. One million people are going to die peacefully, and in doing so, they will stop your world from being destroyed. However, you have the ability to sentence one thousand people to a horrifying, agonizing death that will stretch on for days; but in doing so, you will save the lives of those one million people. What do you do?

Incidentally, these are the rules the other thread started with, it's just that some people started answering multiple sets of questions.

Anyway, answering for Trevor:

"1. If you could bring any one person back to life, who would it be?"

(at start of the story) No one. I'd like it if my Mom didn't have to die, but if she came back now we'd run into the same problem that caused her death.

(at end of the story) Definitely the voice. I need him.

"2. If you were in a sitation where you could achieve your ends through two means; brute force or subtle manipulation, which would you choose?"

Subtle manipulation, obviously. Only idiots depend on brute force. If your opponents have any modicum of planning, they'll make your brute force benefit them.

"3. You are presented with a damning choice. One million people are going to die peacefully, and in doing so, they will stop your world from being destroyed. However, you have the ability to sentence one thousand people to a horrifying, agonizing death that will stretch on for days; but in doing so, you will save the lives of those one million people. What do you do?"

(I'm assuming choice #2 also saves the world, since otherwise that million are doomed anyway.)

Let me think about that. Will anyone know that I'm responsible for this? I'd want to make sure they think someone else made the choice, in case they think it was the wrong one.

And who is going to die? Are any of them allies or enemies of mine?

If they're all just innocent human beings, I'd go for the torture option. If any of them are elves, I'd go for the option that kills the least elves, because the voice wants us to protect elves. And if I could take out some of my enemies, I'd like to do so.

Also, can I watch them die? If I touch someone as they die, I sometimes get a jolt of energy.

My three questions:

1. Who or what do you most fear?

2. Are you proud of who you are?

3. Do you believe in good and evil, and if so, which side do you think you're on?

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

1. Who or what do you most fear? I fear losing my sister, I especially fear that I lose my sister becuase of her own free will he went back to our parents....

2. Are you proud of who you are? Yes. Always have, always will, and if my parents hate that then that's just a bonus. I have done plenty of things I'm not proud of, but I've done more that I am proud of. I help people, I raise my sister, I'm getting an education in my dream profession, and I like the way I am becuase of all these things.

3. Do you believe in good and evil, and if so, which side do you think you're on? White-and-Grey Morality, G Rey And Grey Morality, and Black-and-Grey Morality exists, you guys say it yourselves. There' no definite good and evil, jut people who do things that help or harm others and people who help people help or harm others. But the reasons can be totally not evil. So yeah, there's malice and anger but there's no pure evil like there's no pure good.

But if you must know, I'm Neutral Good.

OK, sounds like some questions for James, my newly-turned vampire geek with muscular dystrophy.

"1.Your Favorite kinds of music?"

Anything with good lyrics.

"2.Do you have any siblings? What do you think of them? If you don't have any, would you want them?"

No siblings. My Dad split when I was diagnosed, and my Mom never remarried. Besides, any brothers of mine would have a 50% chance of muscular dystrophy, and much as my Mom likes me, she'd rather not have to look after two of me. Too much work.

On second thought, though, I wonder if I have any vampire siblings. I'll have to ask Alexis if he's turned anyone else.

"3.Windows, Mac, Linux, or other?"

Linux, definitely. Open-source is the way to go. That's how I learnt about operating systems and how to hack into them. Now, I'd never use these skills maliciously. But Alexis wants to find pedophiles to bite, and if you know what someone's been downloading, that's pretty easy.

More questions:

1. Do you want to live forever?

2. What are your dreams? What are you doing to accomplish them?

3. Do you get along well with other people?

Answered as Niko di Lar Garu from Tales of the Bamuri

1. I'm a faerie - I won't die of old age or sickness. If I meet someone who can best me in a fight, I'll die fighting.

2. My dream is for Diego to hold his throne for as long as he lives. I'm his kwyyn, and that means I have a duty to protect and serve him, and I take my job very seriously.

3. If you're good enough to be in the Lar Garu Bamuri (the Wood Moon Court), you're good enough to be my friend, and everyone else can die for all I care.

4. What is the most embarrassing thing you've ever done?

5. Why do you do what you do?

6. Have you ever betrayed a friend and lived to talk about it? And Why?
