Given how successful he is in his chosen field, and how he presents himself in his videos, I absolutely believe that Sakurai is the sort of person who enjoys trying to do something he thinks can't be done.

Based on the way he described what I assume is a mostly real interaction, he probably did initially look at Minecraft and say "it can't be done" and when Nintendo sent a suit to try to convince him because Minecraft would be a huge get for them, he promised to try and of course he and his team came up with an idea that worked.

Minecraft officially released in 2011, but was in a publicly playable state as early as 2009.

Steve looks like his up B has some kind of glide to it.

So it's better for horizontal recovery.

Same. I probably made a lot of the older guard here feel really old.

I'm talking people whose first console generation was the seventh generation. They would have been kids when Minecraft was new.

Heck, I had classmates that were into Minecraft. I always manage to be the one person who is never interested in the "trendy games".

My only issue is the lava bucket. I wish the lava piles would stick around a little longer.

Yeah. And the whole point of the statement was that you can't just put characters in Smash willy-nilly. People are convinced Smash characters are literally just something you do in a spreadsheet with their "moveset maker" template, forgetting things like how said character interacts with the stage, other characters, and the like.

And of course you got idiots trying to spin it as though he hated making Steve and was being held at gunpoint. Despite showing that he likes Minecraft afterwards.

The entire "Sakurai hates Minecraft" argument is utterly ridiculous.

'Steve is interesting, as he's a sudden reminder to the Smash fanbase that they're not just composed of older gamers, but younger gamers. He's one of the only characters that isn't just new themselves, but is from a newer franchise.'

Sudden reminder? Of the 8 DLC characters, 5 are from the 10s and 4 of those just from the past 5 years.

To be fair, Minecraft has a wider appeal to the younger gamers compared to Dragon Quest, Persona, Fire Emblem, or AR Ms.

They did say "franchise," and of the DLC fighters, previously only Min Min's franchise fit that criteria.

Joker, the Luminary alt of Hero, Byleth, and Min Min were all more recent than Minecraft.

No, he doesn't. He doesn't share any animations with any other characters, a hastily made mod would just be a model swap.

Also I'm seeing people literally spinning things like how Sakurai is forced by Nintendo to work Smash... despite multiple times being shown to be a workaholic who never wants to leave Smash alone.

Welp I ain't buying the pass now. Hopefully the last four characters are worth getting separately, I utterly REFUSE to have Minecraft content on my Switch.

Oh, wow. That reveal was hysterical. I loved it!

My favorite part was Mario's absolutely shocked expression at seeing Steve. I didn't think it was possible for a character like Mario to look like that. I'm guessing Sakurai had much of the same reaction? I almost want to frame that and put it on my wall.

Well, the last 4 characters would be worth the price of the pass already, so...go with that if you will.

Imagine being this petty. You'll still have to see it online, so get used to it.

So what would you do if the next Smash had Steve in the base roster? Just curious, but giving up a whole Smash game is definitely not a cost I'd be willing to pay no matter how much I dislike certain roster picks.

Sure, don't buy the Minecraft DLC, even though there's nothing wrong with Minecraft objectively. Your loss.

I am... 'pleasantly surprised' is not the right word, more 'pleased to be surprised'.

Steve's a big deal third-party, which I wasn't sure we'd be getting any of in FP 2, so he does raise my hopes. But also I like that from what I can tell, if he got leaked, he flew under the radar.

Don't do that...

Not getting the character isn't exactly something to flack over.

The irony is that people are impressed with how Steve didn't leak right before this reveal, except he was leaked 2 years ago by Vergeben.

x10 Minecraft doesn't interest me, and I understand the decision to hold off on buying the pass, but this is just ridiculous.

I already bought the pass because unlike some Smash fans I do want to have all the characters because even if a character disappoints me initially, I can still enjoy the moveset. Or that there'd be a character I'd be pleasantly surprised that they're in there, while still having characters I personally want.

EDIT: I'm not giving them flack for not wanting a character, it's rather the anger that I find ridiculous.
