To be honest I can see them doing both, picking one style when you start the mode. It would at least keep things a little more interesting.

A question I've been wanting to ask... and it's probably going to sound weird: are there characters from a series you don't really care for that you wouldn't mind seeing in the game? Like, I know people who hated Kid Icarus Uprising but enjoyed the inclusion of Palutena, or thought Corrin looked interesting despite not liking Fire Emblem Fates.

I'm not asking for you to tell me why you hate a certain series or character or whatever, but whether or not you'd be okay with a character from such a series making it into Smash. Part of this is coming from the responses I've seen in regards to Simon in particular, with a lot of folks having no idea who he is (especially compared to Alucard, who kickstarted the Metroidvania trend and is at least not as obscure to modern audiences thanks to the Netflix series being relatively popular), but thinking that he and the stage he brings with him looks cool.

For me, that character is Isaac. I have a ton of problems with Golden Sun and honestly kind of hate it^note More specifically, I hated the first game and liked the second a little bit more but still found it pretty bad as an RPG., but I'd be lying if I said the idea of Isaac (or Felix... or Jenna) being playable and repping the series didn't excite me at all. The series always had spectacle and I think seeing that translate into a full Smash moveset would be pretty awesome.

Is that "don't care for" as in "dislike/hate the game or series" or just "no real opinion/neutral towards/don't know enough about it" (seems like the first but then there's being inspired by Simon who was more "people not knowing who he is")? Because for the first... can't really think of a series or game, at least not first party or third parties that have a "realistic" chance, I'd say I outright DISLIKE, and even if I did I'd still be fine with them if they at least were interesting to play as or I liked the character by themselves. For the second... well, quite a few of the "popular wishes/requests" are characters whose game or character themselves I'm more neutral towards, sometimes due to never having played it and not knowing enough about it to really form an opinion. Like mentioned before, there would be very few characters I'd actually DISLIKE seeing, and for the "neutral/meh" characters I'd at least be happy for their fans even if I wasn't that personally excited. Plus for Simon I went from "meh" to "hmm, could be interesting to try" after the trailer and gameplay videos, this could very well happen with similar characters. No characters from either category are currently on my wishlist, though, aside from a general wish for "more playable series represented overall"

I find it hard to believe that most people wouldn't know who Simon is. I wasn't even alive during Simon's heyday and I still know who he is. Has everyone been living under a rock or what?

Never played Xenosaga, know very little about it, have not pulled KOS-MOS in Xenoblade 2, but I do want her in. She just seems cool from everything I've heard about her, and while I generally don't pull for third parties, she was made by a Nintendo studio, so I can make an exception.

I'm just surprised to hear someone say they hate Golden Sun. The opinions I've heard usually range from great to above-average, with all others having not either not played it or just not heard of it. I'm very curious to hear an opinion of someone who hates it.

@PushoverMediaCritic, last page: I know the CSS is arranged by number. Doesn't mean I can't arrange mine however I please for just a roster image.

Though I do hope the final game at least lets us rearrange the CSS (and SSS), I don't like them being arranged by debut number. The fact that the official site lets us list characters by series instead of number gives me some hope for that.

I am very indifferent towards the DK series, but I'd like to see Dixie make the cut. Same goes for Shadow from Sonic. Andy from Advance Wars too, now that I think about it.

Both, as I've seen people use the second statement as a negative in some cases.

-shrug- I admit my experience is, well, anecdotal, but to me it seemed like more people knew about Castlevania as a franchise but not Simon himself. Especially after the Metroidvania games became the series standard for a time.

Hoo boy...

Not the first time I've been told that, but I'm not sure I can accurately describe my feelings about the series. It basically boils down to my finding the writing and narrative to be bland (and worse, almost deliberately confusing in a way I haven't seen since Simon's Quest), the characters extremely one-dimensional even by pre-Gen V-and-on Pokemon standards, and the battle system flawed and underdeveloped. The main thing I think the series does well is spectacle: the design, sprites, effects, and music are all really good for the GBA (even though I find almost all the non-battle music extremely boring), but I also kind of feel like that's one of the reasons the series was as popular as it was. My favorite aspect was collecting the Djinn and seeing what kinds of crazy summons and battle effects I'd get.

I've played through some of the original before dropping it, trying to get back into it multiple times over the years, but everything about it aggravates me. I eventually played The Lost Age, which I felt was a little better in some ways (I remember thinking the battles in TLA were at least harder compared to the original), but worse in others ("make everything a maze" is not good dungeon design, and I feel that TLA has the worst dungeons). Dark Dawn was... passable, but I also felt it didn't really do anything that TLA hadn't, making it feel rather samey if you've played both IMO. I did think that the writing was at least better compared to the GBA titles.

Part of my attitude also comes from being almost unable to express any sort of negative opinion regarding the games to anyone who likes them, especially back when they were new and when I first developed these criticisms. Like, I get that it's popular, but not particularly why, especially nowadays. And since I hate blaming nostalgia and thinking that "they just like the graphics" for those kinds of feelings, I'm just going to assume that maybe I'm just not seeing what made it so endearing to so many players.^note Main reason I even played TLA was because my own brother was a huge fan of the games, and I watched him played through them both on our GBA Player, so it's not like I went into the sequel completely blind.

And truth be told, I don't hate hate the series as a whole, just the first game, which I think is just bad. It's one of the reasons I would rather have Felix or Jenna instead of Isaac, really (petty as that is).

There's an old LP on the LP Archive on the first two games that I feel more or less matches my feelings regarding the series, especially the writing, characterization, and plot issues I had, since the author is pretty much the only other person I've seen on the internet express almost the same feelings I had. But he also goes a bit further by suggesting ways he feels would "fix" the series, in his opinion, which is a lot better than just complaining about something and not even trying to keep it constructive. If you want a second, similar opinion, then there's one.

Hmm, on the subject of characters I would like to see in Smash despite being indifferent to their series... for me, it would be Crash Bandicoot and Spyro. I've never played any of their games, but I think they would be great additions to the roster.

Funny you should mention this. I feel like a lot of people know of Simon, and that they know his role as the first Castlevania protagonist, but not much else about him beyond that.

Actually, watching a lot of reactions to the latest Direct (it's a bad habit of mine), I get the impression that half the streamers had heard of the Simon leak and knew nothing else about Castlevania besides it being a spooky series with Dracula. As in, right as soon as they see Simon's boot they go "ZOMG Simon Belmont!" as if it's the most iconic boot in video games. You can especially see it when Richter shows up and suddenly the streamer's air of Castlevania expertise immediately falls apart. Not everyone, of course, but enough people to make it funny.

I'm kind of the same way. I liked SotN and knew that Simon was the main character of the first two games and the fourth game and... that's about it. I always took him for one of those characters whose existence was more iconic than he was.
