About the looking at details in the background of where Sakurai is talking, in hindsight, the background at the E3 trailer was a pretty big hint for K. Rool, with that pirate ship-looking ladder.

I feel like this is probably overthinking things. Sakurai does a lot of neat stuff, but the furniture in the Direct is probably just furniture.

And the Rathalos picture is probably just a vaguely RPG-ish image, not a specific call to Golden Sun.

So in this three-and-a-half-hour podcast about King K. Rool, DK Vine co-founder Hyle Russell makes some interesting claims. (Starts at 3:26:05.)

Basically, he says he has "an informal source at Nintendo," whom he met at E3 2015, who recently gave him some info on Smash 4 and Ultimate. According to this source, Nintendo never actually planned to put the "winner" of the poll in Smash 4—it was only a means for them to learn more about what their fans liked/wanted. Bayonetta was already in development before the poll went public.

Furthermore, they were very surprised by King K. Rool's performance on the poll. They didn't realize the character was still popular. Because they weren't planning on adding any more characters to Smash 4, they made the K. Rool Mii costume as a last-minute treat for the fans.
