Seriously? Marisa's boring old witch hat? It's not even in my top 10. Keine's pagoda, Sanae's snake, Suika's chains, all of that means nothing to you in the face of a witch hat?
And come on, Fedora.

You forgot Shiki's judge hat.
And Sanae's snake thing is boring. And not even a hat.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAnd come on, Fedora.
No, not seriously. I hadn't really thought about it until now. If nothing else, it's second to Mima's wizard cap.
Who?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersOh no you don't. I'm not going to fall for that one again.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers
He said "headwear". And Sanae's snake thing is awesome.
I expected better from the Father of the Youkai of Hats. I suppose the apple fell pretty far from the tree in this case.
It basically fits with her deep down longing to be an animes character but looks silly aside from that.
Write what you don't know, that's what I've always said.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersSpoken like a true Gensokyojin.
Common sense and good writing habits are a weakness.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersFinal thoughts on Mary and Renko:
Mary, the one who doesn't belong
Mary's a girl who's known she was different from an early age. She could see things nobody else could, things that didn't exist in a physical sense and could only be described by what was around them. She carried on, had a proper education even if she never got an appetite for the "hard" stuff, but all the while she continued exploring the oddities and mysteries she could sense as easily as others noticed the weather. And to Mary's delight, she found a kindred spirit, someone to form a two-person "club" with and skulk about strange places at odd hours, questing for the supernatural in a world defined by superscience.
But now she's begun to dream, and found a place far removed from the world she grew up in. A place alternatively enticing and terrifying, a place that's made her question everything she thought she knew about what's real and what's fantasy. A place that she fits into far better than the world she knows. So far it's been a place that she has only visited for brief snatches, but if Mary managed to find a proper entrance to it, would she have any reason to stay in a world that she increasingly doesn't belong in?
Renko, the one left behind
Renko is a girl who's always been sure of her place in the world. Even if she isn't calculating her position with a glance skyward, she's studying advanced physics and other science. She felt like she was on the verge of understanding life completely, that everything happened for a logical reason that could be discerned by thoughtful mortals. And then she met Mary.
Now Renko has to deal with her friend's dream visitations that make the laws of entropy sit down and cry. The same logic that seemed to promise greater understanding is forcing her to admit that her friend can travel to another world by means unknown - and that she's jealous of Mary for it. She's kept her inquisitive streak in the face of such weirdness, joining the Ghostly Field Club in an attempt to get to the bottom of it, but now Renko has to ask herself if she really wants answers if it could mean losing her friend.
So there's that. I was tempted to call the summaries Tacitus' Character Analysis of Maribel Hearn and Renko Usami, but that'd be wringing too much out of a joke.
As for who to do next, Chen should be quick n' simple *, so my vote's for her. Then after that we can do Marisa, and maybe mention her headgear at some point and how it expresses her inner insecurities and struggles with agoraphobia.
"Long" meaning "since 1884" in this case. But you got me wondering - what if the mundane world referenced in the series was itself an alternate setting? Like, if somehow the act of moving a bunch of magical creatures into a glorified wildlife preserve had the effect of dramatically boosting scientific progress. Maybe there was a guy who had the choice between working on nuclear fusion or trying to photograph fairies.
Nah, you don't need to be a musical "expert" to understand it - universal form of communication and all that. Since ZUN is basically making Touhou to justify composing, I think it's important to look at his themes and figure out what he's trying to tell us about the characters.
...On that note, have we figured out if Renko has a theme song yet? Having a character without music is almost disorienting.
I can see Suwako's hat becoming a "character" due to the googly eyes, but Satori's third eye? Really?
...'Kay, we gotta think of names for Shinki's wings.
Final final thought: I really want a mention of the Kakutasu Company or Saboten energy in Mary and Renko's setting. Now with gratuitous amounts of continuity! Gratutinuit... congratutuit... gratuituituition... bah.
Current earworm: "Awe of the Unknown"I could do with some Chen. I've got something in mind for her.
I like the duality in your write-ups, Tacitus. Along with everything else. Your write-ups are always very intelligent but kind. And stuff.
About Mary: I only just realized something while reading that. Mary's old-fashioned dress and bonnet make her look nothing like what one would expect from anything in the future, unless the fashion tends towards an extreme retro style. She looks more like a Touhou character than a "real world" character, which I guess I finally understand the significance of.
I can't say that I've ever heard that one either. Touhou fans seem to have bizarre nicknames for everything, so I figured I'd just roll with it.
That one is pretty uncommon; Satori's heart is rarely used as it's own character. Comes from Morino Hon's 4koma, like Pyonta
Morino Hon? That makes it acceptable.
In my mind, this further underscores the magician/physicist contrast. Maribel is all about the magical stuff, and this includes Gensokyo. In contrast, Renko represents the scientific, the normal stuff, and thus the real world.
Chen, right? Are we making this happen or not?
Patience, grasshopper.
Seriously now. If no one's going to do the write-up, I will, and that's not something anyone wants
I believe in you Hylarn.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThere was a miscommunication. I will have the writeup up some time tomorrow.
Okay, I lied. Here we go!

Voice: M1 Grand Prix, Touhou Castlevania
Themes:
Diao ye Zong (Withered Leaf)*
Stage: Black Cat in the Village of Spirits
It wavered in the village in which people are not. Mayohiga, village of apparitions, has always refused humans.
bgm: The Fantastic Legend of Tohno*
Spellcard Motif: Magicians and Supernatural Beasts
Notable spellcards:
PCB Stage 2, PCB Extra Stage, StB
Cat Monster "Chen", Oni God "Rumbling Jingoku-ten", Wizard Sign "Phoenix Egg"
Write-up:
Nekomata are strange beasts. According to folklore, when a cat gets old enough, its tail will eventually split into two and it will start walking around on its hind legs, casting ghostly fireballs and reanimating corpses by jumping over them. Some phantom cats are benevolent and others are malefic, but they are nothing to trifle with in either case.
And charming as she may be, young Chen is a particularly fearsome example. As if her lightning speed and razor-sharp claws weren’t enough, she’s also the shikigami of Ran Yakumo, wielding terrifying black magic when the spirit is upon her. She even rules a whole village of cats!
But forget all of that. Isn’t she adorable? CHEEEEEEEEN!
So let’s hear your take on the second star of Ran’s binary system. Is Chen a snuggly housepet to the Yakumos or a hot-headed and determined servant with everything to prove? Is she a brave guardian of the cats of Mayohiga or an ineffectual figurehead earning nothing but bites and scratches from her subjects? Is she a dangerous monster or a sweet kid? Might she be all of the above?
Relations:
- Yukari Yakumo, her master's master.
- Ran Yakumo, her master.
- The cats of Mayohiga, her servants. Allegedly.

Totally. It's my favorite headwear in the series, hands down.
