The idea is that Yangchen is so attuned to the spirit side of things that the Avatar past lives threaten to overwhelm her. It's not a matter of accessing the past lives as it is a matter of keeping them out.

Which is an interesting contrast to the "too spiritual" problem Aang had; his Avatar State was on a hair trigger.

I decided that in addition to a roster, I should choose some stages to go with my dream Avatar fighting game. Sometimes it can be hard choosing locations that are iconic or interesting, and also have access to both water and earth.note  Locations will be listed in order of their episode of first appearance.

TLA:

  • Freedom Fighters' Treetop Hideout (ground level, nearby stream)
  • Foggy Swamp
  • The Serpent's Pass
  • Ba Sing Se - Palace Exterior
  • Ba Sing Se - Underground
  • Fire Nation Royal Plaza (Day of Black Sun siege)
  • Western Air Temple
  • The Boiling Rock
  • Fire Nation Capital - (Last) Agni Kai Grounds
  • Wulong Forest

LOK:

  • Southern Water Tribe - White Lotus Training Grounds
  • Avatar Korra Park (Republic City Park)
  • Air Temple Island Courtyard
  • Southern Water Tribe - Northern Military Encampment (Dark Spirits)
  • Harmonic Convergence
  • Republic City Spirit Wilds
  • Northern Water Tribe - P'Li's Prison
  • Zaofu

Some stages would've been nice but there isn't really a way to get enough of an element in, or were removed from consideration after I determined I had a lot to go with:

  • Kyoshi Island Village
  • City of Omashu - water from sewer system isn't the best idea
  • Northern Water Tribe - Spirit Oasis
  • Earth Rumble Arena - there's not really any water here
  • Piandao's Estate
  • Lost City of the Sun Warriors - water isn't readily accessible
  • Si Wong Desert:
    • Wan Shi Tong's Library Exterior (no water)
    • Misty Palms Oasis
  • Republic City Pro Bending Arena - not enough non-metal, non-disc earth
  • Aang Memorial Island
  • City Hall / Tarrlok's Office
  • Fog of Lost Souls
  • Northern Air Temple interior
  • Kuvira's Train - no water

[up]x4 Smart choice. I mentioned earlier how starting with a movie about Kyoshi would be a bad idea, since that would only appeal to hardcore fans— something counterproductive to their goal of turning Avatar into a major franchise.

The current Franchise.Avatar The Last Airbender page lists the Team Avatar film as having replaced the Kyoshi film, to be followed by the Zuko film and then the Korra film. Is this based on anything? My assumption was that this is the "Zuko-centric" film (Zuko is a member of Team Avatar and all) and that the Kyoshi film was probably still happening. I really think we're jumping the gun assuming it's not.

I think we should remove the mentions of the other two films and just say that a Team Avatar film is coming in 2024. That's the only one that's actually officially confirmed. The others are based on "sources" that avatar-news claims to have, which have now very quickly been revealed to be wrong in at least one respect. I think we should stick to only listing future projects that are actually officially announced.

They had Janet Varney reading a Kyoshi book in the Gaang movie announcement, so I think that’s their way of saying they’re not ditching Kyoshi’s movie.

I'm going to compile and update my thoughts on an Avatar fighting game.

Huh. Right now the big gameplay question I need to decide on is should ring outs be possible or not. On the one hand, battlefield removal is a very valid way to end a fight, and equalize power levels in traditional games. Also, I wouldn't need to put an artificial dome over combat. On the other hand, plenty of fighters have logical reasons to recover from BFR, especially Avatars, airbenders, and the most powerful benders, so it really wouldn't be an equalizing factor here.

    Gameplay
The game would be a 3D fighter, inspired by Tekken, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, Pokkén Tournament, and other games. I'm aware there are non-Namco 3D fighting games, but for what I envision, most of the inspiration comes from those.

Basic gameplay:
Battles would take place in flat arenas of varying widths and lengths, with different obstructions possibly shaping terrain.

Combat can take place at different ranges:

  • Close quarters, at which point hand to hand, martial arts, and short range bending would be more useful.
    • Non-benders tend to be best at close-range, but the ability to close distance isn't tied in to someone's ability to bend or not.
  • Mid-range, where most bending, and thus most combat, takes place.
    • Basic projectiles are at their most precise at this range.
  • Longer distances, at which point larger-scale bending and traps/environmental effects can be more useful, but these moves are easier to see coming.
    • Basic projectiles automatically tracks in the general direction of the opponent, but not as full homing moves, so projectiles can still be sidestepped at longest distances.

Controls:
Controls would follow a 4-button control scheme of its own design. Controls are numbered using the 1/2/3/4 system for game controllers, where 1 is the leftmost button, 2 is the top, 3 is the bottom, and 4 is the rightmost. Special moves are done by doing varying combinations of buttons and directional inputs.

  1. Negative Jing
    • The traditional "block" button, but also works with special abilities in different ways.
    • By rotating the control stick 360 degrees and pressing this button, characters who can redirect Water, Earth, or Lightning in canon can redirect those things in game.
  2. Upper Body/Punches
    • The most traditional of attack buttons. These attacks involve punches, weapons, head-based abilities, etc.
    • When combined with Negative Jing, this tends to signify deflection special moves, setting traps, and the like.
    • When combined with Positive Jing, this tends to signify the more powerful and ranged offensive moves.
  3. Lower Body/Kicks
    • The other traditional attack button. These attacks can involve kicks, advanced movement attacks, etc.
    • When combined with Negative Jing, this can be movement abilities such as hovering, sliding on ice, etc.
    • When combined with Positive Jing, this can strengthen the basic attacks of Positive Jing, since power comes from the root and core.
  4. Positive Jing
    • The traditional "special" button, this is used for more basic bending or special abilities.

Alternatively, controls could follow a 6 button control scheme. the 4 face buttons would work identical to Tekken, with each one controlling a corresponding limb, 1+2 being upper body attacks, 3+4 being lower body attacks, and other combinations of buttons playing out similarly logically. Meanwhile, Negative and Positive Jing would be the remaining two (shoulder) buttons. A layout like this could allow for more nuance in attacks and larger movesets.

    Roster
My original thoughts are in this post. Below I'll expand my thoughts on the playstyles of each of the characters I would include. Characters are also now sorted by their bending/non-bending style.

Avatars

Aang (Book 3)

  • General Playstyle: The most defensive of the Avatars, specializing in evasion and defensive walls and armor. Does not use his staff.
  • Special abilities:
    • Pressing all 4 buttons when at low health activates or deactivates the Avatar State, which increases power at the cost of slowly draining health.
    • Seismic sense can slow down and dodge incoming attacks just before they connect.

Korra (Book 1)

  • General Playstyle: Perfect for beginners. The most offensive of the Avatars, one of the highest damage output of the roster, and the most well-rounded character of the full roster. Does not use Airbending. Excels at all ranges. Cannot enter the Avatar State.
  • Special abilities: Some defensive (waterbending) moves can heal damage.

Korra (Book 4)

  • General Playstyle: Straightforward offensively, but has a variety of more specialized moves similar to other characters on the roster (spiritbending for momentary binding of opponents, healing, etc.), making her a Jack of All Trades.
  • Special abilities: Can momentarily enter the Avatar State at any point in battle, to strengthen her next bending ability.

Airbenders

Aang (Book 1)

  • General Playstyle: The most defensively evasive of the airbenders.
  • Special abilities: Fights with his glider staff, which can increase his melee range and projectile power.

Tenzin

  • General Playstyle: The most offensive of the airbenders. Works well at mid and long range. Projectiles tend to have good knockback. More of a "long reach" fighter than a traditional zoner.
  • Special abilities:

Zaheer

  • General Playstyle: Specializes in close range offense compared to other airbenders.
  • Special abilities: Has an asphyxiation special for high damage, but it's easily interrupted.

Waterbenders

Katara

  • General Playstyle: The most well rounded of the Waterbenders.
  • Special abilities: Some defensive moves can heal damage.

Huu (not in his giant swamp monster form)

  • General Playstyle: Resource management based.
  • Special abilities: Can gather plant matter to increase the range of his plantbending attacks, which are used for long-range grabs and hits. Can also create fog to disguise his movements and make projectiles harder to hit him with.

Amon

  • General Playstyle: Defensive and evasive, turtle gameplay.
  • Special abilities: Uses bloodbending to temporarily disable bending abilities of enemies (when in close range), or to bind and very rarely throw enemies at a distance. Does not actually have waterbending projectiles, instead using bloodbending to deflect incoming attacks.

Tonraq

  • General Playstyle: Excels at close range combat and close/mid-range bending. Highest speed of the waterbenders. Great agility.
  • Special abilities:

Eska

  • General Playstyle: A trap/projectile zoner. Her attacks take sweeping movements that cover a lot of vertical height.
  • Special abilities: Can set her brother Desna in place. When she does bending attacks, he will also do them, allowing for multi-directional attacks, or stronger attacks when she stands near him.

Ming Hua

  • General Playstyle: A long range specialist who also has great agility.
  • Special abilities:

Earthbenders

Toph

  • General Playstyle: Excels at mid and long range.
  • Special abilities: Seismic sense can slow down and dodge incoming attacks just before they connect.

King Bumi

  • General Playstyle: Excels at mid and close range. Powerful single attacks.
  • Special abilities: Can phase into the ground and reemerge elsewhere.

Long Feng

  • General Playstyle: Highly powerful single attacks. Fights very stationary.
  • Special abilities: Can pin or bind opponents with rock gloves. Can cling to vertical surfaces.

Bolin

  • General Playstyle: The most straightforward of the Earthbenders, with more traditional attacks focusing on punches and upper body bending and projectiles.
  • Special abilities: Can set lava traps that inflict damage to whoever walks over them. Traps dissipate over time.

Lin Beifong

  • General Playstyle: Excels at mid and close range, using metal whip cables for most of her attacks, giving her long reach.
  • Special abilities: Seismic sense can slow down and dodge incoming attacks just before they connect.

Kuvira

  • General Playstyle: Control oriented. Fights fairly stationary with low mobility, but can move opponents around herself.
  • Special abilities: Metal clips can bind or reposition enemies.

Firebenders

Zuko

  • General Playstyle: Straightforward and easy to use.
  • Special abilities: Can use his swords to extend his melee range.

Azula

  • General Playstyle: Defensive/keep away. High agility.
  • Special abilities: Blue Fire deals less damage but has high knockback.

Iroh

  • General Playstyle: Excels in mid and short range. Among the most damaging moves.
  • Special abilities: Heat conduction specials can enhance his close range attacks for more damage.

Ozai

  • General Playstyle: Excels in mid and long range. Among the most damaging moves, and largest hitboxes for bending attacks.
  • Special abilities: Can attack while doing his special flight movement.

Mako

  • General Playstyle: The most straightforward of the Firebenders, with more traditional attacks focusing on punches and upper body bending and projectiles.
  • Special abilities:

P'Li

  • General Playstyle: Keep away. Very damaging at long range, but weak at close range. Very low mobility.
  • Special abilities:

Non-Benders

Sokka

  • General Playstyle: Very damaging close range weapons (club and space sword), but he has to corner opponents first. He also has the lowest mobility of the non-benders.
  • Special abilities: His only projectile is his boomerang, and only one can be out at a time, but it always comes back to him.

Suki

  • General Playstyle: The most defensive of the non-benders, not only using her shield or fans to block attacks, but also has counters and throws against close-range opponents. Her katana is for slow but very damaging offensive moves. She's much more agile than a defensive character would seem.
  • Special abilities: Counter heavy moveset at close range. At long range, she can throw her fans, but they don't return and must be picked up.

Jet

  • General Playstyle: Fairly good speed and agility. If his agility is beaten, he has the worst defense of the non-benders. Combo oriented.
  • Special abilities: Longshot shoots projectiles for him. Has the longest range melee attacks by hooking his swords together.

Ty Lee

  • General Playstyle: Aggressive control based. Very short range, but combo oriented.
  • Special abilities: Mai shoots projectiles for her. Chi blocking momentarily slows enemy movement and disables bending.

The Lieutenant

  • General Playstyle: Close range specialist. Stun batons do extra damage against Waterbenders and armored characters.
  • Special abilities: Projectiles are the Equalists' bolas, which aren't damaging, but pins the opponent in place.

Zhu Li (Mech Suit)

  • General Playstyle: The slowest of the non-benders, but a tank with high defense, and surprisingly high mobility.
  • Special abilities: Fire, electric, and cable attacks, similar to some of the attacks of Firebenders and Metalbenders.

True, but you could do both.

Also, I still disagree with the premise of separating Aang and Korra into two characters each.

Ah, talking about fighting games again? I hadn't thought much about what stages exactly for my dream 2D fighter, just that there should be an equal amount from both series (obviously).

One thing I know I want to see is Kyoshi Island. The stage would trigger a special victory pose once certain conditions were met, and Crazy Foaming Mouth Guy would respond to the pose by foaming crazily and collapsing. Aang, clearly, would be doing the marble trick, Sokka may do a haiku, Bolin could do a trick with Pabu and Zuko would do his dramatic shirt-taking-off thing from The Beach (CFMG's equally crazy foaming sister may react to this instead).

I also figure Omashu would be a stage as well, in both normal and conquered versions. The normal version would have a special ending where, if you ended with a strong attack, the loser would crash into the Cabbage Merchant's cart (sorry, I don't see him as a playable character — but he's definitely getting a cameo).

We'd also get several different versions of the pro-bending arena — one as a regular bending match, one taken over by the Equalists, and one used as a mover theater featuring Nuktuk, Hero Of The South. Maybe even a stage on the roof that would collapse to the bending area below.

Also, I figure the stages are the easiest place for Acceptable Breaks from Reality. Whether or not it makes since for all benders to fight there would take a distant back seat to how memorable it was in the show, and how likely fans would want to see it. Granted, this is easier with a 2D fighter, where combatants have been known to summon giant monsoons from off-screen.

I like Kyoshi Island. It was the first stage I added to my list, though I later changed my mind on it in attempt to get the stages per show closer to equal. Omashu was also on my list, though it'd definitely be implemented in a 2D fighter easier than in a 3D fighter, ironically because of how 3D the city is. Also, lack of accessible water.

I get your point on Acceptable Breaks from Reality.

So as I write this, I'm re-watching The Avatar and The Fire Lord and once again, I can't help but wonder what things would have been like if Roku hadn't stepped right into that burst of volcanic ash.

The entire future of their world was decided by one wrong step. Especially since I really do believe Sozin didn't consider doing anything until that moment he saw Roku there, helpless.

I'm surprised no one's ever written a fan fiction about this particular nail.

And watching this makes me remember (as I've think we've discussed in this thread) that Sozin had the right idea (the Avatar is living proof of what the nations could do together, along with Republic City) but used atrocious methods. Maybe if Roku had been able to think of a method to shut him down beyond kick his ass, then maybe things would be different.

Huh, and as the episode ends, Toph's question of whether friendships can last more than one lifetime ''gets answered pretty thoroughly in the sequel series.

That's so nice.smile

Sozin didn’t have the right idea because he didn’t care about unity between nations, it was just a cover for his imperialistic ambitions. Every time someone in the series talks about “unifying peoples” (Sozin, Unalaq, Kuvira, etc) it’s always a euphemism for invasion. Sozin certainly didn’t care about “unity” with the Airbenders.

Well, ok. He was full of shit.

To full of shit to realize that, rather than forcing his culture on other nations, there were actually things they could all learn from each other.

In fact, the Avatar as a whole should have been a symbol of potential unity for the four nations. The culminations of all four styles and all four cultures.
