- Aluminum Christmas Trees: Johnny Cash actually did propose to June on stage. This was not an invention of Hollywood.
- Award Snub: While fans of the movie thought Philip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning performance in Capote was great, many argued that Joaquin Phoenix should have won the Oscar instead.
- Alternate Character Interpretation: Compressing Johnny Cash's life into a few hours makes him come off like kind of a Jerkass sometimes. The most prominent example would be appearing to lose interest in his wife and children only a few scenes after begging her to marry him (actually a period of over a decade). Also, some of his attempts to romance June come off poorly without context.
- Nightmare Fuel: The scene in which Johnny's brother, Jack, dies rather gruesomely. A table saw is involved.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Cash's career after his marriage to June.
