YMMV / Viking Wolf

Go To

  • Narm: "I spoke to a colleague last night for a second opinion to check if such mutations in wolves have been documented before. He said it had to be a werewolf." This was intended to convince Liv that Lars was telling the truth. But what animal expert would simply conclude that an animal is a mythological creature?!?
  • So Okay, It's Average: Critics and audiences alike have agreed that the film is nothing groundbreaking nor original, but does at least offer a few moments worth mentioning.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Most have praised the werewolf effects. It's worth mentioning that Jim Udenberg, who has worked on other big-budgeted movies, has said that he had always wanted to create a werewolf. The transformation scene was also filmed with prosthetics and animatronics.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Lars, the werewolf hunter, is very knowledgeable about the werewolf as well as its origins and weakness. Come the climax, when he recklessly rams his RV into the hardware store hoping to strike the werewolf. Unsurprisingly, this doesn't work and he's shortly afterward eaten by Thale.
  • The Woobie: Thale. GOOD GOD, THALE. The entire film is pretty much a Trauma Conga Line for her. She lost her father, and cold-shoulders her mother for it while adjusting to living in a new town. And this is before the plot begins. She then witnesses a bloodied Elin being dragged away by something monstrous and becomes traumatized by the whole thing. As her transformation commences, she suffers dreams about blood, hallucinations about Elin's corpse, and some bullying from popular kids. And just when it looks like she's finally feeling better about everything, she partially transforms and (unwillingly) kills Jonas, who has been nothing but supportive of her. After realizing what she has done, she tries to run away only for her to transform into a bloodthirsty wolf. It only gets worse from there.
    • Same can be said for Liv. Despite her efforts as a dutiful cop, she lost her husband and possibly loses her oldest daughter by the end. Either way, her family will never be the same again.
