YMMV / Torin's Passage

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: After much buildup, the final fight with Pecand ends rather quickly and is easy to figure out. What's more, it's Lycentia, not Torin, who ultimately stops him for good.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Indiana Jones swinging into a lava chamber, with a tidbit of the iconic theme... Before falling in, and dying. This is never explained, acknowledged, or brought up again.
  • Bizarro Episode: Chapter Four, Asthenia, takes place entirely in an abandoned, gloomy, lava-filled cavern and is the only world to feature no other characters to talk to. It's a striking contrast to the zany creatures and lush scenery of the other worlds.
  • Breather Level: Chapter Three is relatively short, features only one way to die, and just a couple of serious puzzles. However, see That One Puzzle below.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Asthenia. All of it.
    • The first half of the prologue. Pecand casts a spell that manifests as ghostly venomous snakes, which murder the King and Queen and would have also killed their infant son had he not been outside with his caretaker; she begins walking back inside, sees the snakes encircling the prince's empty bed, and flees with him into the stormy night. Later on, you learn that the two were, respectively, Lycentia and Torin.
  • Older Than They Think: Fans were puzzled when Al Lowe, a guy best known for making raunchy adventure games, would design a family-friendly game. Al has actually worked on family-friendly games, mostly educational ones, before making Leisure Suit Larry.
  • So OK, It's Average: Seems to be the consensus about the game. To cite one example, PushingUpRoses has dubbed it "hidden halite" rather than a "hidden gem."
  • Strangled by the Red String: Torin and Leenah meet for all of five minutes and are hopelessly in love. Then, when Torin goes down to Asthenia, she heads back to Escarpa and we never see her again. Presumably, this would have gotten fleshed out more in the sequels that never came.
  • That One Puzzle: Arranging the Pergolans on the star-shaped platform in Chapter Three. It especially stands out because the rest of the Chapter is Lighter and Softer.
  • Underused Game Mechanic: The gimmick of Boogle being able to shapeshift is set up to be a major part of the gameplay, but it's only used a total of six times through the whole game. Worse yet, every transformation only gets used once, even though it remains in the inventory after using it.
