  • Franchise Original Sin: The episode adapts both "Toby's Seaside Holiday" and "Bulstrode" from the Railway Series book Toby, Trucks, and Trouble. This wasn't the first time two book stories were combined into a single episode; "Edward and Gordon" was an adaptation of both "Edward's Day Out" and "Edward and Gordon" from the first book, while "James and the Coaches" was an adaptation of both "James and the Top Hat" and "James and the Bootlace" from the third book, and "Whistles and Sneezes" was an adaptation of both "Gordon's Whistle" and "Henry's Sneeze" from the sixth book. The difference in those adaptations is that their two stories blended together seamlessly and had a natural narrative flow. Here, Toby's and Percy's stories have nothing in common, but some bizarre-sounding dialogue added at the end tries to make it look like they do.
  • Fridge Horror: The subplot with Bulstrode omits one very important detail from the source material. In the book, the quay slopes downwards, and Bulstrode is moored at the end of it. The cause of the accident is runaway trucks after a coupling breaks. In the adaptation, this is replaced by Percy pushing the trucks through some buffers, and off the edge of the quay onto Bulstrode. Percy essentially ruined someone’s life.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Bulstrode. Due to the change in circumstances regarding the trucks falling on Bulstrode, Percy is the one who caused Bulstrode to be towed to the beach and left there for life. After all, Percy has been in more accidents, crashes and smashes yet he still is allowed to be in service on the rails. In comparison, Bulstrode has been the victim of Disproportionate Retribution. Furthermore, like James covered in tar in Dirty Objects, Bulstrode has his sad face on when left on the beach.
