YMMV / The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm

Go To

  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Wilhelm insists upon writing down all of the fairy tales he either creates or hears, before they become lost to time. After a flood damaged the camera negatives, the whole movie nearly became lost to time, until Warner Bros. and Cinerama, Inc. commissioned a 4K digital restoration of the film. The Warner Archive's 2022 Blu-ray release of this restoration renewed public interest in the movie, especially when reviews hailed it as one of the most beautiful-looking Blu-ray sets of the year.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: For many viewers, Wilhelm's charming and technically-impressive Fantasy Sequences interest more strongly than do the brothers' tribulations in the real world.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Barbara Eden wins Jacob's heart three years before starring in I Dream of Jeannie.
  • Tear Jerker: A feverish Wilhelm dreams of various fairy tale characters informing him that if he can't write down their stories, they'll "never be born." When they learn that he's become too sick to write, they ask if he can at least name them. He comes up with seven names, only for all of the characters to disappear before he can help the others.
  • Values Resonance: Hundreds of years after Wilhelm began recording fairy tales in danger of disappearance or distortion, preservation and distribution of stories remain pressing issues to creators and their fans. As evidenced by the near-loss of this film, and the decades it spent out of print on home video, the issues extend to stories told through mediums nonexistent in the Grimms' time.
