- Harsher in Hindsight: A football team is violently attacked by Springfield for losing the championship match at the beginning of the episode. Nine years later, the same town would verbally attack Bart for losing a baseball match and drive him to suicide.
- Memetic Mutation: The term Jerkass got its origin in this episode. Fans at alt.tv.simpsons used it to refer to the "Jerkass Homer" era after Homer himself yelled "Outta my way, Jerkass!" twice at the Movementarian compound.
- Woolseyism: When Kent Brockman does his speech as The Quisling because the Movimentarians took over KBBL Broadcasting in the Latin American translation, he instead spells the letters as "K-Y-C" (Pronounced "Cállese" — Spanish for "Shut Up"), which makes it a stronger example of an Orwellian order.
