YMMV / The Simpsons S 9 E 13 The Joy Of Sect

Go To

  • Fan Nickname: "Jerkass Homer", used to describe Homer's characterization during the Mike Scully era, originates here.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Movementarians using a Batman (1966) meme to brainwash Homer. Some may have seen it as a ludicrous joke when the episode first came out, but with the rise of social media, memes have become a common way to lure users into Internet cults and reactionary movements. Some of these groups even have detailed documents explaining how to use memes to brainwash people.
  • Memetic Mutation: The term Jerkass got its origin in this episode. Fans at alt.tv.simpsons used it to refer to the "Jerkass Homer" era after Homer himself yelled "Outta my way, Jerkass!" twice at the Movementarian compound.
  • Woolseyism: When Kent Brockman does his speech as The Quisling because the Movimentarians took over KBBL Broadcasting in the Latin American translation, he instead spells the letters as "K-Y-C" (Pronounced "Cállese" — Spanish for "Shut Up"), which makes it a stronger example of an Orwellian order.
