YMMV / The Orville S1 E03 "About a Girl"

Go To

  • Ass Pull: What are the odds that a renowned Moclan author would not only happen to be female, but that the Orville's crew would find her and convince her to testify?
  • Fridge Logic: Headed off at the pass. Bortus has to sit on his egg for a few weeks, so one would wonder 'what if they had to urinate?' but its mentioned that Moclans only urinate once a year.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The scenario presented is directly analogous to intersex children being automatically surgically assigned a sex (usually female) at birth on the justification that it's a birth defect, a practice that continues in first world countries to this very day. This is never even mentioned, and the episode goes for a much looser transgender comparison.
    • It is established early on that female Moclans are believed to be born only once every seventy-five years, yet the Orville crew uncovers three (Hevina, Klyden and Topa) that were all born female and do not appear to be separated in age from Bortus by more than a generation. While it's possible that the former two are Older Than They Look, it seems questionable enough to suggest a potential conspiracy - that the acknowledged statistic might be a lie, female births aren't nearly as rare as indicated and the Moclan culture is suppressing the knowledge of its female population to maintain the impression of a One-Gender Race. However, the crew never seems to consider this possibility. It's ultimately confirmed in season 2 episode 12 that female Moclan births are significantly more common than the government is willing to admit.
