• Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Mathilde is bitchy and greedy to Madame Forestier and her husband, and The Reveal that ten years' worth of labor after sacrificing almost all their money to buy a genuine diamond necklace was for nothing. Way to hearten the audience, de Maupassant.
• The Woobie: Mathilde's husband, who goes through the same punishment she does (on top of having to give her a lot of his savings for a dress) for no reason other than the fact that he's the husband of someone who's looks-obsessed and can't own up to her mistakes. She at least deserved it to some extent; he didn't.
