YMMV / The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet

  • Awesome Music: The main reason why people are so hellbent to find the artist(s) behind the song is because it's just that good, extremely reminiscent of the post-punk of its alleged era, with many citing similarities to Joy Division, The Cure, and even Swans to an extent.
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: The lyrics, being so enigmatic and melancholy, lend themselves to multiple interpretations:
    • The lyrics refer to a character who is incarcerated or condemned, hence the references to the sun never shining, the consequences of living (or leaving), and there being no tomorrow.
    • The era and location in which the song was likely written and performed (1980s West Germany) leads many to propose that the song is a metaphor for the Cold War, and that the lyrics describe a (failed?) attempt to traverse the Iron Curtain.
      • One of the most common theories is that the original performers were an East German garage band who somehow were able to smuggle a demo tape to the West — which explains why there's no paper trail or any memory of the band who performed the song in the music scene of early 1980s Hamburg. On the other hand, how or why the demo tape ended up in distant Hamburg when (West) Berlin was a much more plausible destination, or what a group of young musicians trapped on the far side of the Iron Curtain hoped to achieve by sending a tape to a Western radio station, are problems with this theory.
      • One more specific theory is that the song refers to a Czechoslovak engineering student who built his own plane and defected across the border to neutral Austria, which happened in August 1984. A plane, after all, can be said to fly "like the wind", and there is obvious pun potential in "check it in, check it out".
    • Some of those who believe that the song is French in origin have proposed that it is a retelling of Les Misérables (which had premiered in French, but not English, by this time) as told from the perspective of lead character Jean Valjean. Several lyrics are said to allude to the musical, particularly the line about "young and restless dreamers/dreaming".
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet" and variations thereof were wholly invented by the people carrying out the search, as nobody has been able to definitively prove its actual name. Many other people give it alternate titles derived from the lyrics (the ones that can be unambiguously deciphered, at least), such as "Like the Wind"/"Blind the Wind", "Check It In, Check It Out" or "The Sun Will Never Shine".
    • "Happiness Has To Be Fought For", as it's called in the My House soundtrack, a reference to a line in the attached journals.
    • Various things related to the song are commonly referred to with thematically intertwined initialisms:
      • TMS (The Mysterious Song), for the song.
      • TMB (The Mysterious Band), for the band (assuming it is in fact a band).
      • TMV (The Mysterious Vocalist), for the singer.
  • Signature Song: Most people think of this song when they think of Lostwave, alongside Ulterior Motivesnote.
