- Like You Would Really Do It: The film does its very best to make the audience certain Jack Trainer got killed and he's effectively removed from the plot very early on. Then he shows in The Stinger alive and well, even mocking the protagonists - and the audience - for thinking he got killed.
- Serial Numbers Filed Off: It might be as well be a direct remake of Romancing the Stone due to the plethora of shared plot elements and its general structure, along with characters and even tiny details like an improvised, scented camp fire. Tropes Are Tools, for it's still an entertaining film, but it goes way past Homage territory.
- Spiritual Successor: To Romancing the Stone - a romance novel author ends up on a crazy, dangerous adventure and finds her love in form of her unlikely ally. The main difference is that The Lost City is Denser and Wackier.
