YMMV / The Letters

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The Splash of Color sequence, in which Cliona and Michael are dressed up and in a fancy building. Is it an Imagine Spot on Cliona's part? On Michael's? Or is it a more abstract representation of what could have happened to them had life gone differently?
  • Funny Moments: Orla and Deborah start cleaning Mary's house, thinking it's empty and not knowing she's asleep in the other room. So when she wakes up and comes up behind them, they spray her with cleaning stuff, thinking she's a burglar.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Although highly stressed out over the HSE scandals, and a meeting with the Minister looming, Cliona shows her affection for Michael by leaving some biscuits for his birthday with the receptionist.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • John Connors shows up in a couple of scenes as the carer Anthony, in a rare benevolent role in his filmography.
    • Robbie Walsh and Aishling O'Neill have just one sequence in the middle of the film as the sleazy Minister and his Female Misogynist of a publicist but boy do they make an impression.
  • Stoic Woobie: Cliona seems quite lonely and unable to make a love connection with her co-worker Michael, on top of getting discrimination from the Minister because of her autism. And yet she's one of the most stoic characters in the movie.
  • The Woobie:
    • Sam is probably the biggest, since she has four daughters to care for, debts to pay off and is left unable to work because of her illness.
    • Bridget was a victim of the Magdalene Laundries, and Mary was taken off her at a young age; never being reunited until later in life. Her Alzheimer's has her constantly believing she's back with the nuns.
