YMMV / The Invitation (2022)

Go To

  • Awesome Music: It's brief, but the scene where one of the maids is sent to her unwitting doom, she is listening to Joy Crookes' "When You Were Mine" and it's a damned awesome song.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The film tries to play up the reveals that the family are vampires and Evie is the intended bride as big twists, but the problem is that the marketing for the film spoiled virtually everything, with many viewers already going into the movie knowing it was about vampires and that Evie would end up in a wedding dress at some point - she's even depicted wearing one on the poster.
  • Complete Monster: Walter Deville, strongly implied to be Dracula himself, is an ancient vampire who makes a deal with three families for brides in exchange for prosperity and vampirism. Emmaline Alexander escaped him by having a child with her black lover, to the rage of her racist family. Emmaline killed herself and Walter had the butler murder said lover. Upon discovering Emmaline's descendant, Evelyn "Evie" Jackson, Walter has her lured back to the manor where the maids are regularly picked off to feed the vampires, including one whose throat is slit for a celebratory drink. Walter attempts to force Evie into vampirism and marriage, trying to murder her when she rejects him.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: By far the biggest criticism of the film is that it takes far too long to actually get to the "horror" part of this horror movie. We reach the one-hour mark of the 100-minute-long movie before Evie transitions from being on an uneventful holiday and some romantic drama to attempting to escape from vampires; while some spooky stuff occurs before this, it's generally quickly forgotten or brushed aside. Making it especially frustrating for some viewers is that the main reveal regarding the family being vampires and trying to force Evie into marriage is pretty obvious from the get-go (with even the trailers and poster providing major spoilers), leaving almost the entire movie slowly building up to a twist everyone already knew about.
