  • And You Thought It Would Fail: RKO Pictures had very little faith in the film and fully expected it to underperform. They only agreed to finance the project with a low budget ($250,000: $4.7 million in 2020) because John Ford's previous film The Lost Patrol was a big hit, and even then Ford had to forego a salary. To their surprise, it was one of the highest-grossing movies of 1935, won four Oscars, and catapulted Ford and Victor McLaglen to the top of Hollywood's A-List.
