YMMV / The Getting of Wisdom

Go To

  • Adorkable: Laura. She may lack the worldly education of her peers, but she more than makes up for it with her youthful exuberance, awkwardness, and overconfidence. And did we mention her middle name is Tweedle?
  • Heartwarming Moments: A lot of Laura's interactions with Evelyn are legitimately sweet, even before the two end up in a relationship. As is the ending where she gives an emotional, romantic performance of Beethoven's "Sonata no. 21 in C Major", the same piece that first gained her the others' attention, in part as a tribute to her First Love.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Several of the actresses playing the students later went on to become major names in Australian film and television, including Kerry Armstrong (Kate), Sigrid Thornton (Maria), and Maggie Kirkpatrick (Sarah).
    • A young Noni Hazelhurst, best known now as a presenter on such series as Better Homes and Gardens, makes a brief appearance as a maid in the finale.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Annie's expulsion is a genuinely sad moment, seeing as she was one of Laura's few true friends who didn't look down on her for being poor.
    • Even worse is Evelyn's departure near the end of the film, particularly her parting words to Laura, who's clearly distraught the whole time.
