YMMV / The Boys Diabolical S 1 E 04 Boyd In 3 D

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • The Dying Dream Boyd is having concludes with him coming to realize that Cherry might love him, the real, dorky him. Does it mean he has Hidden Depths and is capable of self-reflection or is he a self-centered narcissist, still thinking in terms of getting the gal of his dreams? This is further complicated given he was capable of imagining their relationship having both ups and, more importantly, downs, so he's not just thinking in terms of perfect love that will endure on its own.
    • Since it was all just going in his head, does it mean Boyd actually is into bestiality, given he concocted the whole scenario of Cherry turning herself into a Cat Girl, or was it just part of his Be Yourself realization going through a crazy scenario first? Or is his brain completely fried up, connecting random bits together (the roaring tiger painting in his bedroom or Cherry's face-swap photo)?
  • Audience-Alienating Ending: A lot of fans felt the Cruel Twist Ending of Boyd having imagined everything after he put on Envision for the first time and dying horribly deformed was way too malicious, especially since Boyd did essentially nothing to deserve it.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: First the whole episode turns out to have been Boyd's Dying Dream as he slowly succumbs to Envision. Then his head explodes. And then, just to top it all off, one of the Vought-scientists pulls out his smartphone and takes a picture of Boyd's mangled body.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Even if it was just a hallucination, Cherry's and Boyd's relationship in it's starting phase is incredibly cute. As is their reconciliation after they lost everything and are back to their normal selves.
  • Popular with Furries: It has a woman willingly turning herself into a Cat Girl (chasing her dream, no less) and loving every bit of it. Of course it is popular with furries, Twist Ending notwithstanding.
