YMMV / The Black Mage

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Hey did you know racism and prejudice is bad? Because if you don't, this comic will beat you over the head with that Aesop to ridiculous degrees 'til you do.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The content can be very uncomfortable if you know your black culture, with the Jim Crow reference especially not exactly being in good taste. Yet if you can look past that and the absurdity of the plot (which mind you is completely playing it straight), it might come off as a little funny.
  • Inferred Holocaust: At the end, the black souls are freed from the crystal. When the Summer girl is asked about what she'll do she states she'll go looking for her body while scaring some white people. However it should be remembered that Lynch mentioned the crystal needs to be recharged with a soul every ten years and her body wasn't in the school when it was destroyed. So if it isn't preserved by some magical mumbo jumbo... yeaaaah.
  • So Okay, It's Average: How some readers and reviews see it. The writing and story are not the best, often coming off a bit fanfic-y. But the fights are well drawn and help offset some of the flaws, with most saying that if you don't take it seriously and just see it as a parody in the vein of shows like Black Dynamite, you could get some enjoyment out of it.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A fantasy world which involve some equivalent of racial prejudices and... it rarely explores it. Instead just being a straight forward action romp against KKK members. One complaint against the story is the fact that Lindsay is the only white person to notice something wrong with the school when it would've more prudent to show more of the ignorant student body the wrong their upper facility were doing and to help in the fight against Lynch and the other KKK members, which would've been a good message in unity of both colors.
