• Cult Classic: The film has a miserable critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, lost over three million dollars, and took a long time to get quality home video releases. However, casual viewers tend to like the dialogue, filming style, and characters, and Christopher Walken and Denis Leary fans tend to consider it one of the most underrated films either actor has been in.
• Fan-Preferred Cut Content: While the theatrical ending was a Focus Group Ending that still has its defenders, a sizable part of the fan base prefer one or both of the alternate endings where Charlie spares Elise and Max, as the camera work is better, the grim final version clashes with the comedic tone of the film, and a lot of people feel it is disproportionate of Charlie to be so ruthless to Max and Elise while giving Avery and the others a pass.
• Jerkass Woobie: Avery kidnaps Charlie and sets up the initial kidnapping to pay his gambling debts, but he has some genuine affection for his sister and friends and the panic and/or self-loathing he feels in several scenes can be powerful.
