YMMV / Suffragette

Go To

  • Designated Hero: Edith, to some extent. She is very preachy and critical of Violet when she steps down from the cause as a result of her most recent pregnancy, and conveniently ignores the fact that Violet's husband is an abuser, unlike Edith's supportive husband, and Violet is a working-class mother, as opposed to Edith, who is middle-class and childless.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The cast did a photoshoot wearing shirts emblazoned a quote from Emmeline Pankhurst "I'd rather be a rebel than a slave". Although the quote referred to the suffragette cause and the importance of women earning the right to vote through protest and suffering, it attracted significant controversy due to the role that rebellion and slavery have in US history.
  • The Woobie: Maud. As she reluctantly joins the fight for women's rights, like many suffragettes of that time, she is imprisoned and force-fed in a painful, horrifying way, is disowned by her husband, and even has her young son taken away from her.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Emmeline Pankhurst, played by Meryl Streep, who appears for about five minutes despite being the driving force behind the movement and the inspiration for their daily fight. The in-Universe explanation is she is constantly in hiding due to her popularity which could get her arrested any second.
