YMMV / Star Trek S1 E25 "The Devil in the Dark"

• Ensemble Dark Horse: The Horta was very well-received by the fan base. Author Diane Duane even wrote a Horta crew member (the son of the Horta in this episode), Nahraht, onto the Enterprise in her novels.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Spock's rapid opinion switch about the method of dealing with the Horta is funny anyway, but in "The Immunity Syndrome", he gives a critical speech to McCoy about the human tendency towards A Million Is a Statistic. Given his reaction here^note seeing it as acceptable to risk the lives of the security guards by telling them to capture the Horta if possible rather than killing it, but immediately wanting it dead once Kirk finds himself on his own ten feet away from the creature, it comes across as the pot calling the kettle black.
• Ho Yay: Kirk and Spock argue about killing the Horta, Spock doesn't approve of the idea because he believes it is the only Horta left. But when Kirk tells Spock over communicator that the Horta is in the room with him Spock insists Kirk kill it immediately.
