* HoYay: Kirk and Spock argue about killing the Horta, Spock doesn't approve of the idea because he believes it is the only Horta left. But when Kirk tells Spock over communicator that the Horta is in the room with him Spock insists Kirk kill it immediately.

* SpecialEffectFailure: It's difficult to tell what exactly the Horta is supposed to be. In still frames it looks like an obvious BlobMonster, but in the actual footage it moves like... well... like some sort of insectoid robot covered in a rubber tarp (that doesn't even touch the ground, for that matter), and said movement is accompanied by the sounds of solid stones grinding together.

* HilariousInHindsight: Spock's rapid opinion switch about the method of dealing with the Horta is funny anyway, but in "The Immunity Syndrome", he gives a critical speech to [=McCoy=] about the human tendency towards AMillionIsAStatistic. Given his reaction hereseeing it as acceptable to risk the lives of the security guards by telling them to capture the Horta if possible rather than killing it, but immediately wanting it dead once Kirk finds himself on his own ten feet away from the creature, it comes across as the pot calling the kettle black.

Bearing in mind his reaction here, it comes across as the pot calling the kettle black. To be fair, Spock doesn't believe the Horta is intelligent yet and this affects his opinion both ways. As an animal, it is not something that can be blamed for its attacks against humans in its territory, but is is also not something to give up further lives regarding. It's not actually a contradictory statement.

Not 'just not killing', but leaving the other alone. Also, the miners remove the minerals, but the Hortae eat all rock; their food source is fine.

* Some viewers may experience FridgeHorror at the idea that the miners and the Horta work out an agreement where the miners get access to valuable minerals in exchange for -- just -- not killing the Hortae. They're taking the Hortae's food. What do the Hortae get out of it? Numerous official and amateur FixFic exists showing how they work out a fairer exchange. One may also presume that the Federation can send telepaths to assist communication.
