• Angst? What Angst?: Pitt is remarkably cool at the epilogue for someone whose true love has left him in the last possible moment and is probably dead. Even if the next book establish her as his personal Lost Lenore, it comes across as surprising.
• Narm: The sheer amount of oniric, sexualized Author Appeal. Through the book, the still young Pitt has an on/off with a lovely seductress come literally from the sea, faces a horde of evil aquatic men dressed in loincloths, and fights his ultimate showdown in an ancient sea sanctuary in which everybody end up nude. It just looks like the underwater version of a Jungle Opera or something you would find in Deviantart. It's safe to say Cussler himself realized this, as he didn't want to publish the story and had to be heavily insisted to do so.
• Strangled by the Red String: Dirk and Summer fall madly in love with each other after what cannot possibly amount to half an hour of time together.
