  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Seon-a's depression manifests as the whole world around her being covered in darkness. When it happens, it's quite jarring to say the least.
    • Seon-a's near death experience at the port has the darkness covering the entire port while a distorted version of her son's favorite song plays in the background.
  • The Woobie: It's called "Our Blues", so obviously there's going to be a lot of characters who you can't help but feel sorry for.
    • Lee Dong-seok once lived a happy life with his sister, father and mother. Unfortunately, a series of tragedies led to both his sister and father dying at sea. A month after this his mother remarried to one of his father's friends, a decision he vehemently disagreed with. When he tried to dissuade his mom (who told him that she's not his mom anymore) from doing this, he was slapped over a dozen times before he started to bleed. His stepbrothers would beat him up as well, sometimes in full view of his mother who did nothing to stop it. During this time, he fell in love with fellow woobie Seon-a. She would never reciprocate his feelings, and he was fooled into thinking that she had been sleeping with his best friend. A short while after this, Dong-seok would grab all the valuables in his stepdad's house and would run away from home to make a living in Seoul. Unfortunately, it only amounted to about 20 million Won. Meaning that he still had to live in poverty. He would later have a brief reunion with Seon-a, which would end in her telling him that she still has no feelings for him. Later returning to Jeju to make a living once again, he would be forced to work in full view of his beloved mother who would never apologize to him for her actions. When he finally reconciles with her, she dies the next day.
    • Min Seon-a similarly lived a good life with her parents, until her mother died of some unspecified illness. This drove her father to drinking, with her home being the sight of her uncle and dad fighting most of the time. Eventually, her father would commit suicide right in front of poor Seon-a. All of this trauma would lead to her getting depression, which continually manifests as the whole world going dark.
    • Lee Yeong-ok was born to a pair of artists. Her twin sister, Lee Yeong-hui's illnesses would bleed the family dry, forcing them to sell clothes and burn their paintings. They would get into a car accident and die when Yeong-ok was 12 years old, leaving the poor girl an orphan with a disabled sister to take off. Due to all her boyfriends not accepting Yeong-hui, none of her relationships would work out and she would grow to hate her twin sister.
    • All but one of Hyeon Chun-hui's children died before reaching adulthood, that one child being Son Man-su. Her husband also died at an unspecified time in her life before Son Man-su left for the mainland, leaving Chun-hui alone with only Kang Ok-dong as company. All of these tragedies have left her somewhat jaded and cynical, though she continues working as a haenyo to support Son Man-su and his family. When she finds out that Son Man-su is in critical condition as a result of a car accident, she mourns her son and curses fate for giving her a cruel hand in life.
