YMMV / Once Upon a Time (2017)

  • Continuity Lock-Out: A common complaint is that it's almost impossible to understand the film without either reading the novel or watching Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms. The main problem is that the film can't decide which of the book's subplots it's adapting. As a result most of the plot is about Bai Qian regaining her memories, with Qing Cang's return tacked on at the end, and Xuan Nu popping up at random moments.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Chen Xing Xu has a very small role as an unnamed official. Two years later he became famous for playing Cheng Yin in Goodbye My Princess.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Fans generally agree that it's not terrible but also not great as either a film or an adaptation.
  • Special Effect Failure: The fantasy creatures are very obvious CGI.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: Many of the costumes are tacky, weird, or both. Cases in point: Su Jin, Xuan Nu, and Bai Qian.
