YMMV / Nicole Dollanganger

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is line "He handed me a pair of pliers to pull out his teeth" from Dog Teeth the abuser asking his victim for help or is he daring her to do something about the abuse he's inflicting?
  • Genius Bonus: "Lacrymaria Olor," the Non-Appearing Title of Heart Shaped Bed's final track, is named after a species of ciliates (microscopic organisms found in freshwater). It's an obscure reference, likely to go over the heads of anyone who isn't well-versed in eukaryotes. The reason why Nicole would name a song after it makes more sense if you also know that the name translates to "tears of a swan" in Latin.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The song "Ugly", which has someone comforting their friend and reminding them that they're beautiful.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Nicole Dollanganger is a young Canadian singer/songwriter; her music's defining features are her clear, sweet voice, and the dark, raw things that she tends to express using it. A list of songs of hers that feature creepy undertones would be a mile long, but the worst offenders are "Flowers of Flesh and Blood" — named for a Japanese Torture Porn film— and "Choking Games.", which is based off of the first murder Karla Homolka and Paul Bernado (which can be read about here)
    • "In the Land" also counts, having been written about serial killers David Parker Ray and Theresa Knorr. The "Satan's Den" namedropped in the very first line is a reference to the trailer Ray would keep his potential victims in. The second verse is about Knorr and her heinous abuse of her daughters — Knorr shot her eldest daughter, Suesan, in the chest during an argument, but Suesan did not succumb to her wounds. A year later, Knorr asked her mother if she could move out, and Teresa agreed... but only on the terms that Suesan allow her to remove the bullet from her back. The wound from the removal became infected and yellow with jaundice. Theresa told her other children that Suesan's delirium was from Satanic possession, and that the only way to rid her of the Devil was to burn her, which they did.
  • Signature Song: "Dog Teeth."
  • Squick: Goes without saying.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: "You're So Cool" closely resembles "Robbers" by The 1975. One could dismiss it as a coincidence (since both songs fall under the Indie Pop genre) if the final line of "Robbers" wasn't "you look so cool."
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Her song "Please Eat", which is about dating someone with anorexia and watching them waste away. What makes this worse is that, at some point, Nicole struggled with eating disorders and was even hospitalized.
    • "Dog Teeth", which is from the POV of an abuse victim. The melancholic and numb tone makes it worse.
  • Working Title:
    • "Uncle" was originally titled "I.S.W.M.U.O.M.W.N.," an initialism for "I Slept With My Uncle On My Wedding Night" which is a lost short story by V.C. Andrews.
    • Married In Mount Airy was originally Atropa Belladonna (the scientific name for deadly nightshade).
