• Overshadowed by Controversy: Most of the press Cayla received were leaning on the implications of her being an Internet of Things device, able to collect info on an unwitting little girl who only wanted to play and have a talk with her. Genesis Toys was quick to defend the doll and asserted that no hacking incidents took place involving Cayla; high-profile data breaches such as those of CloudPets and the fact that the doll has an insecure Bluetooth stack along with messages sent through the device being used for marketing and other less-than-savoury purposes sealed Cayla's fate.
• Periphery Demographic: Cayla has since been a fodder for security researchers who are quick to demonstrate the pitfalls of Internet-connected children's devices. One hacker made her cuss like a sailor, while a museum gutted her out and replaced her internals with a Raspberry Pi, turning her into a self-aware tour guide who isn't shy about telling her origins. A similar hack was made by a group who cheekily turned her into a conference speaker.
