YMMV / My Father's Son

Go To

  • Crack Pairing: Jaime Lannister and Rhaella Targaryen. As an alternative to the Lannicest, Jaime being called away as a Kingsguard lead to him being more devoted to Rhaella in the separation from Cercei, and eventually grow into her lover of all things.
    • Benjen Stark and Ashara Dayne were only capable of associating with each other through their families brushing paths. But here, with Ben in the kingsguard, they become paramours.
    • Let's also not forget Benjen's brother Ned falling in love with and eventually marrying Cersei when in canon, they were enemies.
    • Special mention also goes to Dacey and Arthur, who never even interact in canon.
  • Cry for the Devil: Aerys II was a horrendous man, who through trauma, anger and frustration grew to be among the most hated kings in Westeros history, hating those of "different" realms, indulging in Cruel and Unusual Death for his perceived enemies, and ultimately vicious in his last conscious actions. But at the same time, Rhaella recognized that in the past, he'd had some good parts. And in his last moments, Aerys seemed to have the madness he was being influenced by (brought on by an evil god) lift so that he sincerely wished well for his son as he died. Almost the whole family saw how terrible and deserving of the moniker Mad King Aerys was, but those closest still lament that he could've been so much more.
  • Gotta Ship 'Em All: In the world of Westeros, not even marriage can stop you from romancing another. And as such, there is shipping abounding amongst the Ensemble, Supporting, and even some minor characters. Changing the pieces around, while also indulging in some less conventional ships the GOT fandom might have.
  • Iron Woobie: We'd be here all day talking about members who found ways to steel themselves despite the horrors around them. Rhaegar, Elia, Lyanna, Ned, Rhaella and Jaime all come to mind.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Rhaegar and Lyanna were called the "main characters" at the start of the story. So in several instances where Rhaegar gets hammered by Robert or Lyanna threatened by cutthroats, there are some longtime readers who might raise an eyebrow over whether the author really would follow through on a death.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Jon Connington dances with the line first by trying to use Ironborn raids to unsettle the North even before their secret overthrow was in motion. But it really went too far when he used information passed to him by Littlefinger to send the realm to war all so he can remain Rhaegar's most beloved person instead of his wives.
  • One True Threesome: This is how the main characters end up. In not just a happy marriage, but Elia and Lyanna discovering a Bisexuality that would help alleviate jealousy of each other.
