• Award Snub: It received one Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. It wasn't nominated for Best Picture, Director or Actor.
• Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The film was far more succesful in Europe than it was in America, especially in France.
• Vindicated by History: Although immediately popular in Europe, this film was vilified in the USA for both its subject matter and the deep unpopularity of Charlie Chaplin himself at the time, thanks to his disgrace by HUAC. By 1964, the film became a cult favourite dark satire much like Dr. Strangelove.
