YMMV / M*A*S*H S8 E22: Dreams

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The lieutenant who wouldn't send ambulances: an Obstructive Bureaucrat or the victim of a hazing prank from a senior officer who told him he'd be paying for any that were lost?
  • Broken Base: Opinions about this episode have always been very divided. Some see it as a daring experiment that demonstrated effectively the psychological horrors of war and the toll they were taking on the characters; others view it as pretentious and self-indulgent, straying too far from the show's comedic roots, and often use it as an example of the point where they believe Alan Alda received too much creative control over the show.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Klinger dreams he is a Stranger in a Familiar Land, being all alone in his beloved Toledo and constantly reminded of the war. Come AfterMASH, we would learn that Klinger was ostracized by friends and family alike back home for marrying Soon-Lee. While he's not completely alone like in his dream, it's still a bitter pill to swallow for a guy who waited so long to go home.
  • Nightmare Fuel: While the show didn't flinch from the horrors of war, this was the episode where the psychological toll on the main characters ramped that horror up to eleven. Fans have reported sharing these same nightmares after watching this.
  • Special Effects Failure: The limbs that Hawkeye pull off of himself (as well as the ones floating in the river) in his nightmare are obviously mannequin limbs (although this does add to the nightmare fuel and the overall otherworldliness of the whole thing).
