  • Awesome Art: The opening and ending. The way the OP imitates the style of mid 90s anime in its color palette is immediately noticeable, while the ending approaches a more modern style but it still can be placed in the mid 00s. As a celebration of everything otaku, this will be a nostalgia trip even if the series is new.
  • Broken Base: Viewers have been divided over the series in general. Some see it as a fun homage to older anime and celebration of otaku culture. However, others view it as cringeworthy and celebrating aspects of fandom that shouldn't be celebrating.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Perhaps the reason why the SSC recruited Adam for using cheats in games is because it would be convenient to their agenda for someone to ruin the gaming community for everyone else by dominating them unfairly.
      • Another reason may be that SHOBON was envious of games that got the success his own never did, so he recruited someone who shat on them by cheating.
    • Otaku Hero wears a helmet in spite of them not being usually worn by heroes but more by villains. He's the villain of SHOBON's script, so he was given a helmet to go with it.
    • Otaku Hero dies smiling. Having read SHOBON's notebook he knew he was supposed to die with his helmet on, but he had flung it away at the last moment and knew this last act of defiance had given the other Otaku a fighting chance.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Some viewers thought the plot might be interesting if the SSC only existed in the mind of the protagonists a la Welcome to the NHK.
  • Uncertain Audience: Part of the reason why reception was so mixed was because of the clash of cultures shown in the show. The main fighters follow Jun Inagawa's subculture roots, but as a result are very much unlike what would appeal to an anime otaku. On the other hand, the otaku-focused episodes weren't well-received by the intended audience either because they felt it didn't dive deep enough into otakuism.
