The only thing that keeps it from a complete Downer Ending is that his fellow slaves do get the promised 50 acres as part of the bet and Polly gives birth to a son, raising him up with tales of his father's bravery. This is poetically shown with Polly staring at him with kindness in her eyes as she gives him John's hammer, signalling that he dies a free man, literally and symbolically.
