Since its triumph at Eurovision in 2016 and during the following years the song had been a Broken Base among fans, mainly for not being neither the jury's nor the televote's winner and for being in a grey area regarding the contest's "no politics" rule. However, in the wake of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, many Ukrainians fled their country as refugees with Jamala among them, just like her ancestors as narrated by the song. The message of "1944" sadly became relevant again in this context.
