YMMV / Hiwou War Chronicles

  • Adaptation Displacement: The manga version actually predates the anime by around a year, but the latter one is far more well known and widely available. Every online article, even the Japanese ones, seems to focus on the anime with next to no information about what the manga was like. The manga isn't even sold digitally as of the 2020s!
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The anime version is mostly family-friendly with some violence but no nudity. The seinen manga version, on the other hand, presents a minor villainess as a blatant Ms. Fanservice who undresses to put people to sleep with hypnosis. The only high quality scans of a significant portion of this very obscure 1999 Hiwou manga that exist online to show what it was like and how it differed from the anime were posted in 2023 by a certain Twitter account and regarded those very scenes.
  • Narm: The whole time Sakamoto is dying and making a dramatic final speech to Hiwou in the final episode, he's flopped, motionless, face-first onto a small puddle of blood on the floor. Compared to previous scenes like this in the story, it's weird that they choose to make him seem that pathetic in his final moments.
  • Tearjerker: Ishi is badly injured during his team's final mech fight against Hiwou and is barely conscious as Arashi and the others take him away. The group spends the entire next episode crying out to him as he lies crumpled in pain on the ground. He eventually passes away and the boys are left in despair, with Arashi being hit hard enough by the reality of what he's been doing all this time that he walks off while shivering and gives up on fighting Hiwou anymore.
