YMMV / Heartbreak High (2022)

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Does Sasha really care about social justice, or is she just a performative activist?
    • Is Harper's father mentally ill because of his ice addiction or he's just a crazy abusive parent?
  • Anvilicious: There is definitely a whiff of the programme trying to get Peter Rivers to 'redeem' himself by having a child who is both queer and biracial.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Harper. Some people hate her for her treatment of and lack of communication with Amerie and her Karma Houdini status (both for the Incest Map and her dubiously consensual threesome with Malakai). Others view her actions as an understandable manifestation of trauma for a teenage girl, finding her heavily flawed but ultimately sympathetic.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: A good chunk of the fandom believes that Spider should earn a redemption arc, and ship him with Amerie.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Missy and Ant are the least focused on out of all the named SLTs students, but many fans love them and want them to have more screen time.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Despite Amerie labeling her as having a "lazy kebab" vagina, Quinni shows her plenty of empathy after she becomes public enemy number one, and is quick to befriend her even when Darren is more reluctant.
      • And on that note, Darren is everything you could ask for in a friend. When Quinni has a meltdown after her date with Sasha, they leave Amerie's party to be at her side, and comfort her when she's nonverbal.
      • While it's not as significant, they also comfort Amerie after she heard Harper insulting her and when she has a fallout with Malakai.
  • Les Yay: Between Harper and Amerie. As of season one, the two aren't shown to be attracted to women, but as friends they were very physically affectionate with one another. And even after they fall out, Amerie still has Harper's contact as "Love of my life" and calls her her "other half".
  • Love to Hate:
    • Dusty, for spreading the rumor that Amerie was molested by Jojo, humiliating the former and almost costing the latter her job.
      • There's also the fact that he let Harper take the blame, further severing her friendship with Amerie.
    • Sasha, for constantly infantilizing Quinni while simultaneously being annoyed with her for her autistic traits.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: Despite Quinni not having interacted much (if at all) with either girl, some fans have taken to shipping her with Harper or Missy.
  • The Scrappy: Sasha got the hits with this. Not only because of her self-righteous and irresponsible behavior by cheating on Missy with someone else before they broke up. The way she treated Quinni is just, utterly terrible. By the time Sasha got annoyed and then told off Quinni off by her autistic traits, many of the fans grew to hate her more.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Quinni's meltdown and subsequent shutdown after her argument with Sasha struck a cord with many autistic viewers while being incredibly hard to watch. The whole thing makes you want to give the poor girl a hug.
    • In season two, we learn how Ca$h got his nickname. As a child, he lived in a group home before Chook took him under his wing. But the real kicker? His papers labeled him as Child of an Addict and Self Harmer.
  • The Woobie:
    • Poor Harper was drugged, abducted, and almost raped after an argument with her best friend. And when she escaped, it had seemed Amerie shut her out. And on top of all that, she walked in on her dad having an episode and had to stab him to defend herself. How's that for a Trauma Conga Line?
    • Malakai is assaulted by an officer, and the closest thing to help he gets is a threesome (which isn't fully consensual given the fact that he was high and in a vulnerable position), only for the clip of him being assaulted to be spread around as a meme, which cultivates him in attempting suicide at Amerie's party.
    • While it's not much in comparison to the former's traumatic experiences, it's not hard to feel bad for Amerie. On the first day back, her bad decisions come back to bite her, which she wholeheartedly takes the blame for. Almost the whole student body turns against her, including her best friend, who also wrote on the map. And said best friend cut her off without an explanation, leaving Amerie wondering what she had done.
    • Quinni was extremely excited to attend a book signing for her favourite book series, planning ahead for it far in advance... only for Sasha to join in, derail her plans, emotionally neglect her, and express frustration over their relationship. She has a meltdown and spends most of the following episode in a shutdown.
