YMMV / Ghostwire: Tokyo

Go To

  • Complacent Gaming Syndrome: You get many more charges for your wind attacks than for water or fire (ratio is about 6:2:1), which does not encourage experimentation beyond "spam wind until it's dead."
  • Memetic Mutation: It did not take long for the internet to notice that protagonist KK shares his chosen name with one of the mascots of another popular gaming franchise.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Well it IS a game full of Yokai, some of which look rather disturbing. But even some of the sidequests can be pretty wild. "Lost Dog" starts with just helping a guy look for his lost dog. But following the marker leads you to another spirit... who screams that his brother has gone insane and is treating him like a dog, keeping him tied at home and forcing him to stay on all fours. The first ghost then appears as a Specter, screaming at you to get away from "his dog". Just a little reminder that crazy people are EVERYWHERE.
    • One side quest has you head into a school to track down a missing paranormal club. All fine, until you open a door and find a mannikin that wasn't there before...
  • So Okay, It's Average: General consensus is that the game's visuals and atmosphere are extremely well done, exploring elements of Japanese mythology that aren't commonly seen outside of niche horror games, but that the bland and repetitive gameplay coupled with a fairly uninteresting main plot prevent the game from being truly remarkeable.
  • Tear Jerker: The "Hide and Seek" sidequest line starts with investigating the disappearances of children... but all you find is a boy named Yosuke who likes to play hide and seek. Except that's only half the truth. He IS the ghost that has been taking children away to a pocket realm to play Hide and Seek forever. And once you find him for the last time, he remarks that he doesn't want to go home because he will "just have to hide there, too" because his parents will punish him otherwise. KK assures him he's going somewhere better than home as he exorcises him, and solemnly remarks on seeing "good kids with rotten parents" too often on the job.
  • That One Achievement: "Don't Worry About It", where it requires you to draw the worst fortune from the omikuji box at a shrine. It's just a question of sitting there and reloading a save until you manage to get it, which can take hours.
