  • Awesome Music: While the soundtrack in the first game is appreciated for its atmosphere, the one tune everyone remembers is the Victory tune. Meanwhile, the third game is mostly forgotten and seen as bland and inferior, but the remixed Victory tune is seen as the highlight of the game.
  • Good Bad Bugs: In the first game, the only thing in the entire game that can kill you while moving is the Demogorgon. Though this doesn't make the game any easier, since you can't fire while moving.
  • Nightmare Fuel
    • Despite its primitive (by modern standards) graphics, some of the player death animations can be rather horrific and gruesome (like being torn to pieces by a giant beast, or squashed into a gory paste by a giant toad, or dissolved by acidic snake venom).
    • The second game introduces several similarly freakish deaths, such as beings swallowed whole by a giant worm, who spits out your crushed bow soon after. There's also the giant mosquito who sucks all the fluid from your body, then drops your desiccated corpse which collapses into a pile of pixelated dust.
    • The Demogorgon in the first game manages to pull this off without any of the horrific death animations above. You're clued in very quickly that something is amiss when the music abruptly stops and the sky goes pitch black. The only glimpses you see of him happen when lightning flashes, and the longer you take to kill him, the closer and closer he gets to you, adding a sense of deep urgency to the fight. Fail to kill him, and you get treated to Scare Chords as his head descends on you from above, as well as a one-way trip to the Game Over screen.
  • That One Boss
    • The Phantom in the first game. He himself is a stationary target, but he sets skeletons with spears loose on you. You have barely a second to aim and fire at the phantom before you get skewered. And if you miss, you're dead.
    • Demogorgon also counts, despite being the Final Boss. You have only a limited amount of time to kill him and he's only visible when lightning flashes. You have to aim your arrows at where you think he might be. And if you fail, it's an immediate Game Over, and you can't continue.
