- Harsher in Hindsight: The notion of two people having to stay five feet apart from one another became a lot more real - and even, to sound too close - when the COVID-19 outbreak made "social distancing" a requirement for everyone's safety and health. Even more stark is that the two protagonists are supposed to stay six feet apart, which was the mandated distance for much of the pandemic.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- Grey's Anatomy had two CF patients in love with each other in Season 7, eight years before this movie came out.
- In The Kings of Summer, which premiered six years before this film, Moises Arias played a character who believed he was gay because his lungs fill with fluid when the seasons change, and another character tells him with some alarm that he probably has cystic fibrosis. In this film, he plays a character who is gay and has cystic fibrosis.
- Spiritual Successor: Has similarities to The Fault in Our Stars.
