• Ensemble Dark Horse: Soames, the leader of the Central Park Ghosts, is absent from the series for long periods of time but is still one of the most popular characters due to being a Defector from Decadence eco-warrior who leads a faction that is both more skilled and more altruistic than almost anyone else in the story.
• Magnificent Bastard: Wilson is the most powerful Chinese Triad boss in the ruins of New York following the Second American Civil War. Once a mid-level member of the gang, his boundless ambition led him to take advantage of the chaos of the war to assassinate all the members ranked higher than him, and then deliberately provoke an assassination attempt while taking precautions to survive, causing many residents of Chinatown to believe him to be a supernatural being. Wilson also stole a massive amount of gold bullion in the midst of the conflict, keeping it secure using reverse psychology by telling people exactly how much he stole, correctly assuming that everyone would assume he was blowing smoke. Wilson commands the unquestioned authority of all of Chinatown, and attacks all outsiders regardless of faction to keep his neighborhood safe, save some such as protagonists Matty and Zee that he happens to like. Though he dies during the US's final invasion to take back Manhattan, he successfully evacuates everyone else in Chinatown beforehand, and is rewarded for his unlikely heroism after the war by being regarded as an unofficial Buddhist saint, his crimes long forgotten.
• Moral Event Horizon: In-story, Day 204 was this for the United States. Soldiers and probably the US government were starting to feel good about their ability to beat the Free State Army after halting their attempts to take New York. Then a squad with itchy trigger fingers gun down nearly 200 peace protesters and all the momentum and moral superiority is gone in an instant.
