YMMV / Cyndi Lauper

  • Covered Up: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was originally written and recorded (though not released) by New Wave musician Robert Hazard. Given the song by producers and feeling the song was a bit misogynist, Cyndi personally refashioned it into a feminist anthem.
    • "Money Changes Everything" was originally by The Brains.
    • "All Through the Night" was originally by Jules Shear.
    • "When You Were Mine" was originally by Prince.
    • Arguably, she's also a victim of this; nowadays, younger people are probably more familiar with Quietdrive's cover of "Time After Time" than the original.
  • Epic Riff: That damn riff from "She Bop". Also, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", particularly the chorus.
  • First Installment Wins: She's So Unusual, and how.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Thanks to her tireless work for LGBT rights, her colorful image, and songs like "True Colors", she's a huge gay icon and regularly shows up at LGBT events as support. "True Colors" became an unofficial LGBT anthem.
  • Narm: The rather... out of the blue and ridiculous end of the I Drove All Night video.
    • Additionally, her singing face can be quite ridiculous at times.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The smiling Burger Klone customers marching from the "She Bop" music video.
  • Periphery Demographic: Her work in bringing Professional Wrestling into the mainstream thanks to her regular crossovers with the WWF in the mid-80s has earned her a pretty significant wrestling fanbase, including many who otherwise don't care for her music. There is a large, loud and completely sincere section of wrestling fans who believe that she deserves to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
  • Signature Song: "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", although one could also make a case for "Time After Time".
  • Tear Jerker: "Time After Time" was moving enough, but her acoustic version in '05 with Sarah McLachlan is even more so.
    • "All Through The Night", too.
    • The song she composed for Rugrats in Paris, "I Want a Mom That Will Last Forever".
