• Strawman Has a Point: Phena (the equivalent to White Diamond) is a Jerkass who abuses her servants and is responsible for Rose's Awful Wedded Life. However, she is completely right that Rose is cheating on her, yet the narrative treats her as if she is being paranoid.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Both Rose and Greg fall into this.
  • We are supposed to sympathize with Rose because she has an Awful Wedded Life with Phena, who is constantly paranoid that Rose is cheating on her. Except, Phena is absolutely correct: Rose is cheating on her thus making her paranoia look justified. Not helping is how Rose gives Steven tons of love and attention thus putting him at risk for Phena's wrath if she figures out the truth.
  • The narrative clearly wants us to see Greg as a loving father trying to raise Steven as best as he can despite his poverty. However, it turns out that Rose was sending Greg money that Greg refused to use because that would require him to move to a gem-controlled area. So, his poverty is in fact self-inflicted, which makes him look like a selfish Jerkass. Not helping is how Greg uses getting out of poverty as a justification to send Steven to the titular academy when Steven says he doesn't want to go the titular academy.
