** The narrative clearly wants us to see Greg as a loving father trying to raise Steven as best as he can despite his poverty. However, it turns out that Rose was sending Greg money that Greg refused to use because that would require him to move to a gem-controlled area. So, his poverty is in fact self-inflicted, which makes him look like a selfish JerkAss. Not helping is how Greg uses getting out of poverty as a justification to send Steven to the titular academy.

* StrawmanHasAPoint: Phena (the equivalent to White Diamond) is a JerkAss who abuses her servants and is responsible for Rose's AwfulWeddedLife. However, she is completely right that Rose is cheating on her, yet the narrative treats her as if she is paranoid.

** Greg is unsympathetic because he forces his son to live ''in'' poverty because he didn't want to live among Gems then justifies Steven having to go to the Crystal Gem Academy by saying it will help Steven get ''out'' of poverty.

** Rose criticizes Phena for being paranoid but justifies that paranoia by cheating on Phena (the very thing Phena is paranoid about). In addition, she endangers Steven, her bastard son, by giving him so much attention thus risking Phena finding out.

to:

** We are supposed to sympathize with Rose criticizes Phena for being because she has an AwfulWeddedLife with Phena, who is constantly paranoid but justifies that paranoia by Rose is cheating on Phena (the very thing her. Except, Phena is paranoid about). In addition, she endangers Steven, absolutely correct: Rose ''is'' cheating on her bastard son, by giving him so much thus making her [[ProperlyParanoid paranoia look justified]]. Not helping is how Rose gives [[HeroicBastard Steven]] tons of love and attention thus risking Phena finding out.putting him at risk for Phena's wrath if she figures out the truth.

* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Both Rose and Greg fall into this. Rose criticizes Phena for being paranoid but justifies that paranoia by cheating on Phena (the very thing Phena is paranoid about).
