YMMV / Cabbage Patch Kids

  • Accidental Nightmare Fuel:
    • There existed a line of premature birth Cabbage Patch kids, despite premature births generally being a very scary experience for mothers where the baby often doesn't survive due to underdeveloped lungs and other organs.
    • The idea of humanoids coming from plants is strangely reminiscent of the Pod People, though it comes from the "babies come from cabbage patches" children's stories.
  • Americans Hate Tingle: The dolls did not sell well in Japan, because the Japanese considered their facial features to be "ugly" and "grotesque" compared to the flatter and almost featureless faces of characters such as Hello Kitty.
"Let us examine what they did not find kawaii. Cabbage Patch Doll™ did not achieve the great success that it had seen in its native land when it was introduced to Japan. From the Japanese standpoint, they did not look "cute." I heard quite a few Japanese people express distaste, some saying the Cabbage Patch's face was "wrong," "too realistic," and "grotesque" — or, more pointedly, kawaiikune, i.e., "not cute." Cabbage Patch had too many bumps and dimples compared to, say, Hello Kitty™, which featured a very flat, round face with nothing but two elongated dots for eyes." -Themes and issues in Asian cartooning : cute, cheap, mad, and sexy
  • Never Live It Down: The "chewing" dolls from 1996 became infamous for trapping fingers and hair in their mouths.
  • Newer Than They Think: The mythology of babies coming from cabbages actually originates from this toyline.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: While the dolls could be nightmare fuel for some, there are many people who find them cute and adorable, lots of adults have fond memories playing with their Cabbage Patch Kids (and while the majority of people who had these dolls were children in the 80's, kids in almost any generation afterwards can enjoy them due to the Cabbage Patch Kids still being in production today, albeit being manufactured by different toy companies and with updated designs). The fact that you don't buy, but "adopt" the doll, and that they're all unique with different names and looks, makes them very special. And while they were popular with girls, anyone can play with them as the Cabbage Patch has both boy and girl dolls.
