YMMV / Beyond Boulder Dome

Go To

  • Adorkable: The NCR Sergeant in Nova Industries (and the only non-hostile member of the Death Squad), who seems to believe that he's living in some kind of VR game, shrugs off the player's claim that they're killing his fellow soldiers by claiming they'll "respawn", and tasks you with collecting Ghoul fingers in order to win prizes, with the top prize being a unique "Spy Coat" that confers additional Action Points and a bonus to Sneak. Not to mention he showers praise on the player when they bring back any fingers at all. Even for those who hate the Boulder NCR faction, it's hard not to enjoy his conversations.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The starting conflict between the two Ghoulified remnants of the U.S. and Chinese armies. They're the first NPCS the player encounter upon reaching Colorado, but have nothing whatsoever to do with the mod's story, themes or characters beyond being the obstacle blocking your way into the city proper.
  • Difficulty Spike: Despite the Monty Haul of gear you get in the mission, the engagements are typically geared towards a mid-level player or higher — members of the Death Squad wield Marksman Carbines or Anti-Material Rifles, and the engagements towards the end of the main quest will typically pit players against a half-dozen or more troopers at once, to say nothing of the infiltration into Nova Industries (with high vantage points and little cover at ground level).
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Boulder's NCR Division has been turned into a paramilitary group that wants to wipe out everything in the Boulder Dome, regardless of whether they're infected by Seltsam Syndrome or not, and is represented by a Sergeant (Renato) who forcibly converts one of your potential companions into a half-Ghoul and wants to do the same to everyone else in the region, and a Captain (Despot) who refuses to listen to the Courier's arguments and ruins a Hope Spot by executing the wife of an NPC. The Brotherhood of Steel is led by an individual who wants power at all costs, and turns on you the moment who establishes control of the Dome, killing most of the surviving personnel, to boot. And that's not counting the several members who display clear Small Name, Big Ego tendencies by refusing to talk to you until they need something. The large number of Plotline Death moments don't help matters. Small wonder that players have reported massacring everyone in their wake, regardless of faction, in order to finish the mod faster.
  • Unwinnable by Mistake: Killing Doctor Field in the BoS Labs before acquiring the Environmental Armor can consequently make the entire quest chain involving them (and thus, the mod) unwinnable. A hotfix was made later to address the issue.
