YMMV / Batgirl: Spoiled

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Stephanie Brown, the long-suffering but upbeat Ensemble Dark Horse of the Bat Family, suffers an Attempted Rape and is subsequently rejected by the Bat Family. Suffice to say, once the first episode dropped, any interest in the show from her fanbase dropped immediately.
  • Broken Base: The Attempted Rape. It's either not a big deal and just a sign that the series is darker, or it absolutely ruined the first episode and was an example of the overuse of rape on female characters in superhero fiction.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: It's safe to say the series is mostly remembered for the Attempted Rape of an upbeat character and pretty much nothing else.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: What led to the series dying almost immediately; as it turns out, taking a character who was light and hopeful and making a gritty, dark web series where she's nearly raped in the first episode is a great way to make the audience lose interest.
  • Uncertain Audience: Certainly; Stephanie Brown's fanbase had been getting kicked in the gut by canon for a while, so the fan series should have appealed to them, except the Attempted Rape and general gritty nature of the show was completely at odds with her Batgirl run and the kind of story her fanbase would want. Meanwhile, the kind of audiences who'd be interested in a dark and edgy superhero fan series like this would probably not be interested in one about Batgirl, especially not the Batgirl who's market appeal is being cute and funny. This dissonance is likely why the series was cancelled almost immediately.
